I am not at all into fashion, but clothing is still an essential part of my life unfortunately. I need help from those who understand fashion.

So I have very controlling parents and my mom, who has a rather weird sense of fashion, is pushing me to wear a knee-length black-and-white polka dot dress for prom. I don't want to, obviously. I've told her that, but she is still insisting on how polka dots are "always cute for little children". I have a purple cocktail dress with a silver bow as a waist band. I wore it in my junior high's graduation night and my uncle's wedding. So yeah it IS "so yesterday" and all, but the most important thing is: 1) it still fits and 2) it's still more appropriate to wear to a prom than the polka dot. Unfortunately my mom has now announced that my purple dress is very much too small and I "need to realize my own body's size". You really can't argue with this kind of person, trust me. If she says "it's too small", then even if the dress fits on an elephant it's still too small. Eventually, I decided that what's best is go out and get a completely new dress. What kind of dress would you recommend for prom? I am 168 cm tall with typical Asian skin ('yellow', they say) and long hair. Not particularly busty so forget sexy dresses :) thank you in advance.

Please dont wear the polkas

From a guy's perspective I'd have to say, that I wouldn't find polka dots on a prom dress attractive.
As for tips what to wear I honestly have no idea whether the prom dresses where you live are the same as here...cuz from how you describe your Mom all the dresses girls here would wear would be inappropriate in her eyes.

"always cute for little children"

:hmm:

It shouldn't matter what you wear, honestly. Pick a dress that's a color you like. That's about all I can say, sorry.

Good luck, your mom seems like a royal pain in the ass.

Here, girls typically wear a single-colored dress (or shades of the same color), usually with some sort of sequins/sparkles/bows around the bust and waist and the dress is usually on the long side.

You could always go with something pretty simple and neutral; silver, white, champagne... I would stay away from black though and stay away from patterns.

Hopefully you and your mom can compromise on something and you have fun at prom!

Aha! Thank you for reinforcing that LOL somebody else I spoke to said that "hey polkas are cute". Unfortunately I'm not all into black dresses, but thank you.

I don't know, she's hard to predict. She bought me this dress that is so short it ends right under my butt. But now look =\ Thank you again for reinforcing the "no polka" :P

thank you. I like purple or white, but guess they don't mix together :) usually I try to avoid conflict with Her Majesty by doing whatever she wants me to do, but I'm not letting this one slide =\ getting myself battle-ready now... I think best option is to go dress shopping next week.

Thank you :) single-color is definitely what I have in mind.

Find something that describes you and goes good with your skin tone. Most dresses are short, just be sure to make sure the zipper works and everything is fitted the night before the dance.
