View Full Version : How Fat Is Too Fat?

I am 168 cm (5' 5") in height and 58 kilos (128 lbs) in weight. My parents always call me "fat" and pressure me to exercise more (I'm lazier than a pig LOL) but nobody else seem to call me 'overweight'? I do know that my lifestyle is not the healthiest and I am more than willing to exercise more, but the way my parents yell make me avoid exercising when they're around. Unfortunately, they're always around. So am I fat?

It really ends up on to what kind of body structure do you have. My parents told me to lose 10kg from 75 > 65kg, which for me is ridiculously low, 70kg should be healthier. (Note, I'm 1,75m and skinny). Sometimes people over-estimate, under-estimate or even believe that any sort of form can be achieved by anyone.
The only, not very significant, thing I can say is that you're in the normal BMI range (18.5 - 24.9, and you're 20.5). But not even BMI is half-accurate, it doesn't include any factors beyond height and weight.

It all depends on your body. By your weight numbers I definetly wouldn't call you fat, depending on your body you could just be normal to curvy or even chubby or stout, I don't know. As long as your BMI is in the healthy range you should be fine.

You sound like a healthy weight to me. There's a lot of factors that you'd have to include though. Bone structure, breasts, muscle... Obviously someone with a thin frame and no boobs is going to want to weight less than someone with wide hips and big boobs.

(I can't stand when parents do that.)
You're perfectly healthy. You're not fat. If YOU want to lose weight, it's up to you, but don't go off of what your parents say, because from what I've read, clearly they have issues. (Sorry.)

Youre not "fat" but you are kinda overweight, nobody else obviously points it out to you because of manners and it being something a bit awkward to say, my advice to you is, you dont necessarily need to train like an olympic athlete or anything just work on your diet and snack less, be vary now because before you know it you could hit the obese scales, but all you need to do is simply really watch what you eat and youre fine

See OP? Perfectly healthy weight, at least BMI wise, but even aside from that, you are NOT overweight.

OK so 5 people saying I'm in healthy range and 1 saying I'm overweight :) make up your mind folks LOL
Jokes aside, thank you for all your replies. I'm taking all of it into consideration. I do believe my almost non-existent exercise hours are not healthy at all, and I'm gonna find a way to exercise at least an hour a day. Somehow. But I'll try! x

Yeah, you'd want to exercise even if you aren't overweight(which you aren't). BMI just goes on with your height and weight, which generally is okay, but it doesn't classify all that weight into fat or muscle, because it's something that your BMI alone can't tell. you'd have to check your bodyfat percentage for that.
Exercise is great anyway, being nimble is always a plus :P

BMI scales would actually pin point a lot of our population overweight but in truth you aren't really because it depends on image, body structure and to a degree your own personal comfort levels with your own body.

 You are as fat as I am :D
Seriously I feel sorry for your parents calling you fat. Even if you were it's not ok to call anybody this way.
Your parents might be right with their attitude to be upon you to change to a healthier lifestyle though.

They are wrong! It's one thing to have a healthy weight and another to feel pretty. My BMI is of ~20 so actually I'm leaning more towards underweight than overweight. However, I have more fat than lean body mass and I know I need to shed some more fat. Also, remember that muscle is heavier than fat. It's not about the numbers but about your looks and your body's performance :) I think your "numbers" are ok just keep moving and you'll be healthy and toned :) http://www.herinterest.com/8-best-fitness-tips-ever/

If those numbers are completely accurate, your BMI is around 21.3. That's considered normal. Therefore you are not fat at all. That's why nobody calls you fat. I don't know why your parents do, but you I would say you aren't fat in the slightest.

Your measurements don't give the impression that you're fat at all. I'm 5'4" and about 130 pounds. I'm not exactly skinny but I work out often and I can run 2 miles easily, and I'm trying to drop around 10 pounds not because I'm fat, but because I think id look better. Just make healthy food choices and try to get at least a little exercise in everyday.

I RLLY doubt that's too fat. To clarify I'm like 57.2 kilo's and 173? cm and I'm skinny as fuck. I think you're fine. Of course I'm no expert so if you want a medical opinion there are websites you can go to and do tests on which are based on mathematical formulas to see if you are fat or not

Laura, unfortunately I don't talk to my parents. I think it is better to avoid conflicts altogether than spark up a drama :) plus, there's no way I'd be able to pull off such stunt haha I am incapable of feeling feelings x
MechaSniper, thank you for your kind words. It means a lot :)

Lol, that is true...even if you are not overweight or anything working out is always good. And you need all your health when you start college in the states, right;)
I wish I could go back to exercising myself, too, soon.

Ah, I'm not allowed to at the moment cuz I'm ill. I have asthma so regular sports activity is usually healthy for me...but at the moment I have some really bad infection and I have to wait till I'm totally cured again...I'm really sick of staying in bed I can tell you.

In my opinion, a 16 year-old should weigh around 115 LBS for you're height. You're not that far off.

I don't think you are overweight. The only person that is really qualified to say so to be honest, is a doctor. it really depends on your body size and shape, but, judging by the numbers, you are not overweight.
Personally, I am 180cm and I am now down (My doctor approved me to do weight watchers) to 123.5 KGs. Those numbers would give you an image that I would be a fairly big guy, right? Not so. Chubby, yes, but I recently went to QLD (theme park capital of Australia) and there was not one rollercoaster I could not go on due to size. I think it is down to personal view point as well. I want to lose weight so I can be healthier and have an easier time exercising. That, and as a 17 year old, I don't like buying XXL or XXXL T-shirts. Granted, I have broad shoulders, so, if I get skinny, I might still have to wear an XL.
But still.
My advice is to tell your parents to lay off completely. It is a drain on the self-esteem and quite frankly, it doesn't matter how confident you are, absolutely no one needs that. Hopefully they should understand that. Or if they really want to help you, they should encourage you to do things that you enjoy. If you don't need to lose weight, then the most exercise will do is just make you fitter. Hang in there :)

Just a random update.
Over the last few weeks I have been gaining weight constantly. The last time I checked (last week) I now weigh a whopping 63 kilos. I am not within healthy weight anymore. I need to lose weight. So I started working out :) an hour a day.
