View Full Version : Are teachers allowed to do this?

My math teacher gave us time to do our homework at the end of class. She saw me sitting there and she asks me why I'm not doing my homework. I told her I was already done with it. She looks at it and she asks me how long it took. I told her it took fifteen minutes for the twelve problems she assigned. She said she's not giving me credit for the assignment and she wants me to do the same homework again. I asked her why and she told me all the answers were correct, but she wasn't satisfied with the amount of time it took. I really hate this math teacher and I'm happy I only have two months left with her. I'm not doing the homework again, and I told her that. Are teachers allowed to do this? She also told me I shouldn't be working on it during class time, but she told us we could. Yes, I might have done the first two problems before class even started. I think that irritated her a bit.
Math is my favorite subject. I just really hate this teacher. She has done this before. It seems like she singles me out sometimes. I don't even like Geometry at all. It's probably my least favorite thing about math, and it doesn't help that I have a horrible teacher.

Legally I don't really know.
I've had teachers like that in the past and I think it's some sort of jealousy thing like you did it without ''effort''
A good teacher would just try to find you material that challenges you appropriately
And a shitty teacher would do something like she did.
I would not do the homework and if there really is a problem about it I would complain to the principal/head of faculty.

If you were in my country, you could even be appreciated because of the great speed of calculation which you had!

I'm definitely not doing the homework again. I just hate that she made it public. She told me she wasn't giving me credit in an extremely unnecessary tone.

I hate this, i have teachers like this, i know this, i hate this. I decided to show some effort so i finished artwork early, then i had nothing to do and i didn't bring materials for the next artwork (we weren't told what it would be) so she actually had me return 2 hours for not "actively participating in lessons" (i was just doing other subjects)
My Dutch teacher (which is my native language) also makes us do exercises again if we finish them early. Annoying as hell...

Legally yes, but ethnically wrong... Suck it up and don't take her for your next course.

Geometry is a required course and I didn't have a choice. She's the only Geometry teacher.

Take this to the office. As a student, you did your job.

Welll.. You've certainly done a lot better than me. I always did a quite a half-assed job on all of my maths work. Luckily closer to the end when a lot of us were pulled out of our original classes and being moved into a group with possibly the only teacher who knew what he was doing (as well as a woman too but she was really grumpy... the man not so much but I just hated him) I didn't get much homework to do. We literally spent the whole second half of year 11 answering past exam papers and getting our grades on them. He wasn't too bad a teacher when I actually got to know him more but I still haven't forgiven him for something that went on quite a long time ago; there was once again some conflict between some guy and a large group of people including me and we all got in trouble for it... eventually we complained and got him in trouble too because he was the main cause of it and he'd already done a lot more to piss the rest of us, including something he did to me which I think I'm finally starting to let leave my head after 5 years, and even though I made it quite clear to the head teacher and had a lot of talks with her about it I think closer to when it actually happened I was still one of the people to get in trouble for it which caused me a massive load of stress that I really didn't need then...
Anyway. He eventually found out that everyone in our group that was practising the higher exam paper was actually doing worse so then decided to put us all on to the easier exam which did help a lot as I actually got a C then, and he actually did a lot to help motivate us too. I never got told off for extra work I did, except for in year 9 when I had to do some history work over the Easter Holidays (I think Spring break), brought it back and it turned out I completely missed what I was supposed to be doing and the subject. I don't think they should be able to discipline you for actually wanting to do your work in spare time or being quite quick at solving problems, some people are just better at that than others... I was definitely better in some parts of maths but as soon as it came to angles and any form of complex equation I failed... If you're not happy about what's going on, you should definitely take it up to the higher people, i.e. if the maths department at your school has a leader/head then you should take it up to them if that isn't your actual teacher. They should probably be able to look into it I guess, but I think I've missed something again so don't fully understand the circumstances. :kitty:

Wow that totally sucks, if that were to happen to me I would take it straight to the principal. I always do that same thing to, I'm like the only over achiever in my classes so I tend to do my work early.

Yeah. She had the grounds to do pretty much anything she deems necessary besides abuse I guess. You should take it up with the principal though. Do you think there might be any reason that she misunderstood the situation?

She could've given you more complex problems afterwards. To hone your skills. In math, you learn it and have to practice it to know how to use itm

Yeah. You need to be given things that are more challenging instead of being with the rest of the group if you're able to finish it too quickly and easily. Either that or just something else extra to do like having a go at some of the questions you will be working on in the next lesson, as obviously before you do it in lesson you won't know as much about it and it's always good to test your knowledge beforehand...

Did you show your work? I had teachers that didn't accept assignments unless the work was shown. Especially if they were problems from the book, because the answers are right in the back. She may have assumed that since you finished so fast you just copied the answers from the back, if no work was shown. And with geometry there's normally a lot of work to show, although it depends on what you're working on.

unfortunately every school has a scumbag teacher and 99% of the time you can't win from them. Like you said you only have 2 months left with this complete waste of human life so IMO you should just take a deep breath and do what she wants. Think of her as a six-year-old throwing a tantrum. Can't win from them can you?

This is something you bring up with administration immediately. If this happened to me, my parents would be in the office screaming the second they found out.

I've had teachers like that before. I get every single answer on a worksheet correct and finish before everyone else, and the crazy bitch gives me a 0 for not showing my work. Or, we're required to do a paper on one of the founding fathers and I point George Washington out for the mass murdering racist piece of shit he was and she fails me. One time I asked the same teacher if there have ever been any nonchristian presidents and she replied "Obama."
-_-
I know when most people see a teenager with a mohawk who dresses in all black and has piercings complain about school, they dismiss it as just having problems with authority, but it's kinda hard not to when that authority is completely fucking incompetent.

What??? That teacher is crazy! However long it took has nothing to do with the teacher, all students work at their own pace!

Sadly the teacher has priority and you gotta do what is asked of you, but i do agree that is a little harsh.

Just step to the principle or something and tell him, or tell her what you have written here, and that you think it's unfair..
You can say what you think that doesn''t necessarily mean you are rude.

Talk to the head of the math department at your school
they'll most likely find the behavior of the teacher unacceptable

go tell that to the principal or councillor. maybe they can help you transfer out of the class

It's pretty mean that you are being punished for doing good, but she can do it. I you go complain they would like just tell you to get over it.

I have a horrible teacher. legally yes she can and she is questioning you because of the amout of time it took because you could of cheated and another factor is whether your in academic or honors because she might assume your cheating if your in academic. Telling her you wont do the homework regardless id you've aready did it is straight up defiance. You should listen listen to her she doesn't have to teach you anything she is just making sure your learning correctly and not cheating remember she is your ticket to the next grade. As to why she said dont do it during class time even though she told you too it is probably because she meant not
While she is teaching and to do it when she assigned the time to do it.

I'd say no. That, IMO, is just abuse of authority and I think you're quite right as to not give in to her. that bitch needs to deal with the fact that she doesn't have absolute power and that people will and can stand up to her. Glad u only have 2 more months with her
