I love all of them but Virginia Woolf is the most iconic for me.
Harper Lee is pretty much just a one hit wonder even though I love To Kill a Mockingbird.
I do also wanna shout Mary Shelley for just how fucking ahead of her time she was.

Christie, as she has many good books, where the others just have 1 famous one. Not saying they're bad, but Christie has the larger selection

Agatha Christie would be my personal favorite. Ten Little Indians is an amazing book.

Jane Austen is probably the best female writer. Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma are all truly outstanding.

There are also a lot of great women writers not listed. Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Emily Bronte (Charlotte's sister), Louisa May Alcott, Edith Wharton....

Yeah, that's the original title. Wonder why they changed it..... :P

Yeah it was probably ok to call it that when it was written

On this list, probably Agatha Christie (just for entire body of work) and Jane Austen

I’ll also throw in Louisa May Alcott for Little Women (the only one of these I’ve actually read ), Little Men, Jo’s Boys, Eight Cousins, and a lot more

True, this was before it was considered a slur.

All are great writers.
Right now I would have to say Mary Shelley and Frankenstein. This writer and novel contributed to the development of the gothic and science fiction genres and a proto feminist novel.

I voted Jane Austen, but I think Shirley Jackson deserves mention, too. :)

Interesting fact, the book "Middlemarch" written by George Eliot (pen name), is really written by Mary Anne Evans

I voted for Mary Shelley just because of how insanely ahead of her time she was. And the undoubted influence she had on literature after her. She was also a massively important renaissance/romantic era writer alongside her husband- Percy Shelley

My personal favorites from that list are Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf, but they are obviously all capable writers. George Eliot would be on my list as well, though I have only read one work of hers.

Which book by George Eliot? I’ve only read Adam Bede

Silas Marner. Middlemarch is on my to-read list, though, and I have a good copy.

Why are all the writers listed here from ages ago? Why is JK Rowling not on this list?

Hope I'm not too late to the party here but can't believe Ayn Rand isn't on the list. Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged have recently gotten the credit they deserve. Fantastic novels.
