View Full Version : Why?

Why do we believe what we believe. There was another thread on here talking about cold showers reducing urges when you’re horny. That got me thinking why do we believe stuff like that?
Are we conditioned to believe it because older people tell us too? Like we have people that say the earth is flat! How is this possible? Why do they have that belief.
I’m interested to see responses.

I think most things we believe has been passed on from generation to generation, especially religious beliefs, but it can come from friends too, I think.
You wonder if it's because older people tell us, and that could be as well.

I guess I’m just curious on why we never question things. Idk. I had a thought and this what happened.

Spend time with a 5 year old then you wouldn't think we don't question stuff lol
I think its we're taught stuff and with the amount we learn in our lives we have to believe stuff unless we can find a reason not to. If we questioned everything we're told we'd probably never have time to learn anything new

Maybe its the meaning of life. Some of the
things we believe in but not know how or why?

When things become normal, they stop questioning them. Often times things are normalized because of benefits, real or perceived.

Early in our lives, we are formed by our parents beliefs, I think. Especially as little kids, we question things out of curiosity. But as teens, we question differently. We want to be individuals and sometimes push back, at least I find myself doing that anyways.

That's how we all eventually become our own person.

There are a lot of different reasons.
In some cases, we believe things because of tradition, because of what is handed down to us by our family and our society. We value our family and our community, so we believe what they believe.
In other cases, we believe things because we want them to be true, even if we don't have solid evidence that they are. We hope they are true because we want a good outcome. In that case, we're taking a leap of faith.
In the case of flat-earthers, I think those people adopt fringe beliefs because they are fringe. They have the idea that if everyone accepts something as true, it must not be true. That the minority, fringe, "outsider" belief is the one to adopt. These are people who value going against the grain at all costs, even if it seems to defy logic and generally accepted truth.

Despite this key piece of evidence, they still believe. SMH

Answer is simple - humans are morons and the less educated people are, the more idiotic nonsense they will start to believe. Besides, beliefs also come from the uncertainty in the real, wide and scary world. People believe in God because religion provides a certain explanation and reason on why things exist, why things happen and what happens after. Take religion away and what is there - a void, a big uncertainity, too many questions and mystery to existence, no one is there to guide those people. And that is why people are afraid. Some find curiosity in all that mess, but majority is simply not ready for that and will never be ready for that. They have a self-made comfort zone and we people are slobs, we rarely enjoy stepping out of our comfort zones...

pretty much that, lessons and beliefs are passed from generation to generation, people latch onto things that justify their faith and morals.

I think we believe in something because we want to know absolutely everything about our environment or we want to change something that for whatever reason we don't want.
