I was wondering what your thoughts are on a highly debated topic in education. Just answer the questions below and it could get quite interesting.

Do you go to a private or state school?
Why?
Do you like it?
What do you think of the other type of school?
Would you send your child to a private or state school?

Thanks :)

Me:
Do you go to a private or state school? State.

Why? Near to home, the exam results are above average and the boarding school I was going to go to was very sport orientated. Which was okay, but I probably would get bored of it.

Do you like it? I do like my school, the facilities and most of the teachers are great, the atmosphere is very friendly and the opportunities they give are mind blowing! However some of the people need to go and school polices need changing.

What do you think of the other type of school? Private schools are very good. The only bad thing are some of the parents.

Would you send your child to a private or state school? I would send my child to a private school. The standard of education is better, lots of opportunities and most are highly regarded which helps when getting a job/into university. Also they expect lots from their pupils - something state schools tend to miss, plus the behaviour is better in class.

mind you, each private and public school is viewed differently in different countries. This is coming from a Southeast Asian:

Do you go to a private or state school? Private school all my life
Why? Because state schools are dominated by locals (not Chinese like me) and they have the tendency to be racist against us
Do you like it? Well... I guess so.
What do you think of the other type of school? They're far more independent academically but not so great socially.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? Whichever appeals to him/her most? :P

I was in private school for special needs up to last year when I decided to try mainstreaming in public school. I bombed out and now have to either go back to a private school or an online school at home.

Do you go to a private or state school?
I went to a state school but it was a grammar school.

Why?
My parents wouldn't have been able to afford private and I picked a grammar because I was more academic and that was the place I wanted to go.

Do you like it?
I loved it, I wouldn't have had my education any other way.

What do you think of the other type of school?
It's also good in it's own way.

Would you send your child to a private or state school?
State. No matter how much money I have. The people I've met at university that went to private school and the people I knew before from private school all seem to be rather spoon fed, too reliant on others and not very independent it's just all very sheltered. I might be wrong and it might be how they were bought up that's made them so cushioned but I'd have to be sure it was that and just a coincidence they all went to private school before I considered sending my children there.
I'd much rather they went to a grammar school like I did if they did want to be in a very academic environment. But at the end of the day you can get just as good an education if you work hard at any state school, I'm just not sure I agree with the idea of paying for education.

It's really annoying that the government aren't wanting grammar schools. They've closed down most of them in my area and it's just polarising education - there's no mid-point which would suit a lot of people. Academies are pointless and make state schools think they're private so they can kick out all the bad teachers and change everything - essentially making a crappy state school (academies are usually seriously deprived schools) private.

Do you go to a private or state school? Public
Why? Too poor for private
Do you like it? It was ok. I liked that there were no uniforms and I think we had great programs as far as fitting everyone's learning speeds and cababilities... Not all public schools are as terrible as they're rumored to be.
What do you think of the other type of school? Uniforms are stupid, that's basically it.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? Public. Private school is way too expensive. Plus, most of the ones around me are Catholic.

In Brazil things are a bit different, but... Okay! I'll answer both for highschool and college.

HIGH SCHOOL

Do you go to a private or state school? State.
Why? No extra fees (which my parents would barely be able to afford), close to home and also had a vocational school during the afternoon.
Do you like it? It was OK.
What do you think of the other type of school? The best vestibular (SAT-like test to get into university) grades come from GOOD private schools. However, there are a lot of crappy ones as well. Public schools tend to do much worse and be less safe and stuff, but my state school was somewhat privileged location-wise and resource-wise.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? In Brazil, I would have to send him to a public school. Public universities reserve almost 50% of places to people who studied in public schools. And on the municipal/state/federal school thing, I'd send him to a state school, preferably.

COLLEGE

Do you go to a private or state school? State, again. Different state though, from São Paulo to Minas Gerais :D
Why? Private colleges are really crappy and really expensive. No, no and no.
Do you like it? I'm having fun, save some few frat details.
What do you think of the other type of school? "really crappy and really expensive."
Would you send your child to a private or state school? I would not send my child to a private college. It's all or nothing!

Do you go to a private or state school? State but used to go to private
Why? Most of my good friends go to the same school as I go to now. At my old private school I had a hard time making friends.
Do you like it? Yeah it's ok as far as testing goes. The teachers were much better at private though.
What do you think of the other type of school? I think of good education and other stuff.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? Maybe, assuming I have the money a private school. The school I used to go to cost a fortune something like 12,000 a year. But I do know that public school works just as well as private.

Do you go to a private or state school? Private.
Why? Because I can, and come on, it's the only decent option in developing countries.
Do you like it? Of course, love it.
What do you think of the other type of school? I don't know about the US (although I think the answer won't change much regarding that) but here the education level of public schools is definitely way worse.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? Private, definitely.

Here's an essay that doesn't make much sense (I think..)
This is based on the experiences of a slightly insecure 17 year old on the autistic spectrum based on the past 7 years of painful experiences… :)
(I counted this on microsoft word at 1400 words, good luck anyone who reads it :D)

Do you go to a private or state school?
I went to a public school, it didn't cost anything to go there.

Why?
Literally for both primary and secondary school it's because they were the closest to where we live, no other reason. High school was really bad when my brother started there 4 years earlier and even though he got bullied quite a lot there (mainly because he didn't have a proper hair cut for 5 years and it was really long, but still...) and every time my parents complained about it to the highest authority (they didn't even have a head teacher for a while before I started...) all they suggested was that he get a haircut but with a lack of confidence which was understandable he didn't want to get that done and so they had no better advice they could give him to stop it. He once had 2 weeks off school before the Christmas holidays because something happened, I think he got attacked by some cunts as per usual, and I don't think the people who did it to him even got punished. The exam results were really bad at the time I started too, and I think parents who send their kids to a school just because of "above average" exam results and possibly not even looking into more about the school first and previous incidents that have happened there are quite shallow and maybe even stupid, so I'm glad my parents never tried that one on me.

It's only because of where we lived; when I'd have rathered go to the school my cousin went to at the other side of the river or the school my actual friends at the end of primary school went to, as instead of being with my friends I was stuck with the one person I HATE(D) the most of everyone. It was probably the most simple looking school which in a way is why I'm glad I went there and I made some brilliant friends but I don't even talk to most of them now anyway, only the 2 that chose the same college course I did and the people I see when I'm walking around the colleges (as art, sixth form and tech) are all next to eachother)

Do you like it?
Well... I did eventually. I'm still trying to figure out whether or not I preferred it to college. I prefer college because it's just Art stuff, no maths/english/ICT/PE/science/history/geography/RE (the most notable subjects I found... meh) and I can express myself a lot more there, but the condition of the computer rooms is terrible; they hardly have any computers in the college yet 6 courses of people that will need them. This is why I've (atleast said) done some of my work at home, because I haven't been able to do it there... I recently spent a whole week of my time at home doing work for one of the projects because of the computers. And the condition of the workshops isn't much better either... they need a lot more funding and stuff for it to be good. Paying 10p for each print on crappy quality paper is the worst thing though, especially when I need to print A LOT for my final project... I'll need to do a lot of this printing at home too which means buying more ink for our printer, I'm just glad I only need to work on A4 paper for now as the printer is only good for that size.

Another thing I can't stand in college which is kinda unrelated to the topic of this thread; my senses are going wacky again right now and always have been a little bit but not so much, so it's not taking much to set me off right now I think. I can't stand guitars, they really hurt my ears and I have to keep putting music on with my headphones on in the computer room because having really loud music on is the only way I can really block out the noise - I want earplugs too I think; I also get these horrible feelings just in crowded places, and because there's hardly ever any spare computers in the room at college a lot of people come bombarding in and speak really loudly to eachother and I've had to leave the computer room multiple times because it was too noisy and I couldn't take much more of it; I'll have to look more into earplugs because I've looked up more about sensory overloads recently to try and find out more aspects of autism and why I always feel these ways, and the website suggested that if you have a hypersensitivity with your hearing it's good to either wear ear plugs or just listen to music.

What do you think of the other type of school?
Is private school where you pay for your education? Because college costs £150 a year I think on a 1-3 year course and that funds the school trips and stuff... It should also fund the computers and not having to pay for basic A4 prints on plain crappy quality paper, I can't believe it costs 10p for that and I almost failed a project because I needed £1.60 to print off a lot of my work and even though I have a lot of money in the bank I never have access to it as it's Disability, I'm not allowed to spend a lot of it at once / waste it and I feel too awkward to talk to my mum about the fact I need to pay extra credit for the printers. I need a lot to do this work in college, or I can do it at home with the tacky-ish printer which I guess is my best option...

This is what I gathered from the people in my area: I personally think... kids that go to a private school are more smug? Because their parents can afford to get them "better" education, although that depends on the people that go there too and if they're bad, the lessons will be bad, which is why it would be better to go to a public school instead because of bad lessons but no money wasted. There's a private school in Hereford somewhere and I heard about a lot of fights between the people of that school and the people of my school, which luckily I never got involved in, so I guess both types of school are just as bad as the other.

Would you send your child to a private or state school?
Nah but that's because I don't think I'd be capable to have kids. If I had someone sensible to help me along a lot I would probably do it, but I'd definitely have to think about both of these options or find a different way of schooling because things were harder for me due to the fact I'm autistic and I may be over exaggerating but most of it was hell because of this and I would rather have my kid home schooled if this was possible. You can't get bullied in home school because you're always on your own, unless the teacher is rude and horrible, but if the people IN the local schools were anything like the people in my high school I wouldn't want them to make new friends.

I really wish I was sent to a special school because even though I did great in high school in the end, I only went there because I was diagnosed at age 14 which was a year and a half from finishing and it would have been too late to move... My parents had always said I should have gone to a special school anyway, but I think that's because I had a lot more complications when I was younger along with some crap about me possibly not ever being able to walk or talk; I guess they got it half right, I am mostly non verbal until I get to know people (I avoid communication entirely) and the more I think of it (after my friend sadly pointed it out) I have a problem with both my knees I think and stretch them out more than normal when walking, but that's all because of a muscle condition too (hypotonia) and I don't think I can blame autism for all of it.

I didn't know that the government weren't wanting grammar schools anymore, I can think of 5 in my area off the top of my head. And all of them are in the top of the league tables so closing them would be a poor choice.

As for the academy status traditionally yes it was all the bad schools being turned into academies however now a lot of schools are choosing to become academies so that they do have a little more freedom but also the government offer better funding. I know of two schools which became academies in the last two years that are good schools.

The government are wanting to cut on education and grammar schools are apparently really expensive to keep going. They are wanting to "break the barrier" between state and private with academies, essentially they're wanting a 3 tier system however this is polarising them more because there are going to be more and more differences. What's even more stupid is that my friend's school is the top performing school in the country, and is a grammar school, and it's being expected to close down in a few years' time.

Academy statuses were a good idea for badly performing schools however now the "good school", including mine, are jumping on the band wagon and are now seperating the good state schools away from the bad state schools.

My experiences are they don't work. Senior leadership teachers turn into bullies and complete snobs, they spend more on appearances of the school rather than improving teachers' pay and the basic resources are near shocking.

The government should: keep private, keep grammar schools, use academies for badly performing schools, have selective academies and normal state schools.

A Hoosier perspective.

Do you go to a private or state school?

Public

Why?

Because my parents love me. Joking aside, I don't think private ever crossed my parents' minds, and certainly not mine.

Do you like it?

Yeah. I won't lie, I go to a damn good public school. I'm not sure what I would say of I went to some of the schools around me. As for my specific public school? I'm lucky I go there, and I can't complain.

What do you think of the other type of school?

Statistically, in the state of Indiana, public schools have better test scores than private and charter schools. 90% of both are in the bottom 20% of test scores. So, while I hate standardized testing, I think that gives at least some idea of the education quality. There are very few private schools I'd consider "good". There's also the athletic issue. Private schools recruit. You can't deny it. I personally think they shouldn't be allowed in the IHSAA (the Indiana High School Athletic Association). If you look at our state championships for every sport, I can guarantee a private school either won the title, or was runner up, for almost every single one. Not. Cool. Bro.

Would you send your child to a private or state school?

Well, all that being said, public education is being destroyed in the US. The Republican Party (under the guise of "fixing" schools) is slowly privatizing our education system. And, like I said, those schools aren't doing well.

So, I'd prefer my kids go to a public school. At this rate, though, my only option will probably be private.

What do you think of the other type of school? I see Public school as a more diverse place, a place where I won't have to hide myself and who I am, a place where if one person hates me, it is only one person and not the whole school like in private school.
Would you send your child to a private or state school? A state school. Private schools are so sheltered and homogeneous. People say public school is bad but the grass ain't greener over here.

1.Do you go to a private or state school?Pre-K through 6th grade, I went to Catholic school. This year I went to a public school. I'm going back to Catholic school for 8th grade, but I'm going to a public high school.

2.Why?I went to Catholic because my mama is really religious. I went to public because I asked my parents if I could just see what it's like.

3.Do you like it?Both are amazing, each has their ups and downs.

4.What do you think of the other type of school? Look above

I've gone to "public" schools my whole life. public education in my state sucks, partially because it's not public enough. it relies significantly on funding from the state government which is sparse and inefficient. but hey, it's what happens when you let dumb proles run things (hey guys let's cut taxes and gubmint spending! *schools go to shit* SEE HOW MUCH OUR SCHOOLS SUCK THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T TRUST THE GUBMINT!!!)

Do you go to a private or state school? State sponsored high school, I guess

Why? I couldn't afford to go to a private school, even if I wanted to. State Schools are convenient, financially feasible, and still offer a decent education

Do you like it? Eh..... it's ok. It could be a lot better, but it's kinda self explanatory. I feel like if I were a much better student, I would've enjoyed it a lot more.

What do you think of the other type of school? It's fine if you're rich, but I don't see why you'd go to a private high school. Regardless of what type you go to, you're going to end up in one of three positions at the end: In a private or state university, community college, or you're done with education.

Would you send your child to a private or state school? The only time I'd send my kid to a private high school/charter school was if my child was struggling in public school and the presumably smaller Teacher:Student ratio would be beneficial to them.
