...only for the site to forget that I'm logged in and not allow me t post the thread. WTF?! I am absolutely desperate for somebody to listen to whats on my mind right now but I dont want to type all of that again. ive tried doing it on yahoo answers, but it would display anything normally, then i tried other forums but their flash players were crap and wouldnt display security questions, and then this BS happens. if this is normal here then FIX IT!!! It could have saved me this new gash on my arm, because I would have been able to express myself in a harmless manner if your site didnt sign me out for no reason. Now nobody will hear my story, so no advice or support for my not-talk-to-anybody-for-weeks-and-weeks-at-a-time-and-vice-versa sorry ***.

Take a deep breath and write it again. It has also happened to me a few times. Write it first on a separate Word sheet if you like and then copy it into the new thread page. You'll probably even add a few more details that you had forgotten previously, so no problem.

Sign out and when you sign back in, check the box that says "Remember Me." Or... Write it, copy it, refresh to make sure you're still signed in, paste and post.

I had the same problem once, I was writing for like an hour and POOF.
Try writing it in wordpad or something, and copying to Vt afer.
Really sad it happened when you were pouring your heart out /:

Sorry that happened to you. I'm sure we've all gotten zapped like that.

Sometimes pressing the back button shows the textbox with all the text written. It might also be a good idea to choose a different theme instead of the default blue, tat way when you log off you'll notice the difference.

You can type it all again. We can try to help you with your situation.

Just click "preview post" every few minutes. VT has a pretty good holding time before you're booted, so as long as you do that, it shouldn't be a big deal. I was literally on here for five hours straight writing my sex myth list, and all I did was click "preview post" a lot. Everything worked out just fine.

There have been times I've typed a big(ish) thread and something has went wrong. It does happen.

Instead of whining about it, type it again, you've done it once already, shouldn't take you longer second time round.

Its actually quite soul destroying when you've spent a long time putting your thoughts and feelings into a thread only to have it not posted. I've spent quite sometime creating a thread before only for it not to be posted.

This is because the site has it set so after a certain amount of minutes (it's default 15 minutes), the site automatically logs you out. All I can suggest to VT admins is to raise the cookie timer in settings to 3600 seconds (1 hour) or 2700 seconds (45 minutes). Sites like this, people pour their hearts out and if the timer is only 15 minutes, that isn't even enough time to put thoughts down on a piece of paper, let alone type it.
I'll PM the admin(s) with a link to this thread to see what they have to say.. but this is definitely the inactivity/cookie timer, the time is set too low for when some people are typing their post.

I believe we have it set for half an hour unless it was reset during the downtime earlier. Plus, it's not that difficult to simply click "preview post" periodically to precent from having one's session timed-out, so I really don't see why this has to be changed.

That's true, but not that many people know to do this. I'll admit I've done it once or twice where I sit down and write an hour long post and get logged out. It's very frustrating, especially when there's no turning back. It's a simple thing to change whether or not administration wants to do it. :p

What I do (similar to what others have suggested) is — after having typed out a thread or response — I ctrl+a, ctrl+c, alt+s. If it posts, then great. If there's an error (i.e. what happened in this case), I reload the page etc, ctrl+v, and post again.
Sometimes just writing out what you're feeling is beneficial as it gets what you need to say out, to some extent. I hope you're somewhat relieved by that.

I often do this, especially if its a long thread but sometimes people will forget to do this.
What could be useful is an auto-save feature e.g. posts are saved every 20 seconds or something like that so if someone has typed a thread and an error happens or they are logged out then they still have most/some of the work they had previously.

I was going to suggest "auto save" or "message drafts" but there's a version for vB 3.8 but it's buggy.. not fully functional with all browsers. So I don't think that'd be the best alternative. Perhaps warning users of what the current time is that way they already know and it isn't VT's fault if they get logged out or adjusting the time to extend it so it doesn't happen would probably be the best approaches

There's the 'You last visited' time (which I believe is the time of the most recent login) up in the top-right corner and the current time in the bottom-centre. Maybe putting the two together?

I didn't really mean that.. sorry if that was confusing! I meant the time before you're logged out (e.g. if it's 15 minutes, it'd be the current time + 15 min) which is when I'd be logged out. :p

This is a great idea as well.

Only problem is GovTeen has that, and frankly, it doesn't work :P

Well that could be down to a faulty mod. I use a forum called TheStudentRoom and that forum has this feature and works perfectly.
