View Full Version : Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich Steps Down

Brendan Eich has chosen to depart from his position as CEO at Mozilla.
Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich will be leaving his position in the company. His departure was announced today in a blog post stating that Eich was behind the decision and that he did it for the good of "Mozilla and our community."
While the blog post didn't address the controversy directly, its language would suggest that this may be a response to the Eich's past activism against gay marriage, including a $1000 donation to the California's 2008 Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage in the state. These donations were brought into the spotlight when the site OKCupid requested that Firefox users switch browsers to avoid associating with Eich.
Today's blog post, in turn, affirmed that the company "[welcomes] contributions from everyone regardless of age, culture, ethnicity, gender, gender-identity, language, race, sexual orientation, geographical location and religious views. Mozilla supports equality for all."

So, the ex-ceo of the company that makes firefox is a bigot, if I use google chrome they'll sell my information to the NSA, and Internet Explorer just plain sucks. Great. Why can't RedHat make a browser?

because he holds a different opinion than you? that's mature.
this whole shitstorm was fucking stupid, there are a ton of CEOs out there who are guilty of a lot worse and nobody's calling for their resignation.

Nobody's trying to say he shouldn't be legally allowed to be CEO, or have donated to prop 8, or have bigoted personal views. All we're saying is that he's an ignorant fucking piece of shit and we don't want that dickhead in charge of Mozilla, a company whose products many of us use regulary. That doesn't mean any of us think he should've been forced to resign by the government. But since this guy did resign(because of overwhelmingp ublic pressure), I'm going to celebrate. I'm not going to suggest that his views should in any way be censored, but I'm not going to respect them, or pretend to care about his "personal moral beliefs" or religion. I don't give two shits about his religion, or his views, and I'm glad he decided to resign, and that people are speaking out against him, because he's a prick and he deserves it.

I would think that since you have such a huge boner for individualism you'd be aware that people are different and sometimes some people hold opinions that differ with beliefs held by others. but nope, you're having a diva tantrum and acting like a child because someone that you've never met donated his own money in support of a cause that he agrees with. you put "personal moral beliefs" in sneer quotes in an attempt to belittle it, well guess what, people live according to their morals, everyone does. holding beliefs different from those of SIR DONALD THE GREAT doesn't make someone an "ignorant fucking piece of shit." grow the hell up?

His beliefs are bigoted. His cause is bigoted. I don't care if he thinks gays shouldn't be allowed to marry, as long as he keeps that belief to himself. But when he trys to actively stop gay marriage, that's a problem. Who I, or anyone else, chooses to marry is none of his damn business. And if he isn't gonna keep his bigoted views to himself and not donate to a cause that's trying to shove the religious beliefs of the majority down the throat of the minority, I'm not gonna keep my views to myself either.
No, having different beliefs than me doesn't make him "an ignorant piece of shit", but actively trying to force those beliefs upon other people does.

Never heard of him and don't care tbh. All I care about a product is if I like it or not and it doesn't have a rep of malware etc.

you're being a huge hypocrite. according to you, he's not allowed to express a belief that's different from yours (BIGOTED!) and at the same time you also want to flaunt your homosexuality everywhere you go without anyone objecting. sorry, it doesn't work like that. as I stated before, everyone expresses their beliefs, and for you to say that some are allowed to be expressed (the ones you agree with) and some aren't (the ones you don't) makes you just as much of a "bigot" as the Mozilla guy, if not more so. it's this EXACT kind of hypocrisy that lends weight to Christian claims that they're being actively suppressed by progressives.
by the way, this is something else I find hilarious about lolbertarians - you guys want your equality hugbox -AND- an anarchistic free market, the latter of which is as least conducive to equality as you can possibly get. you can have either the equality hugbox -OR- Social Darwinism, but not both.

Let me be more clear. I never said he shouldn't be allowed to think homosexuality is wrong, or that his views should be silenced, or that he shouldn't be allowed to express them. I don't care about that. When I said that he should keep his views to himself, what I meant was he shouldn't actively try to force them upon other people.(i.e donating money to an anti-gay marriage campaign.) I probably could've worded that a little better, and I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. He has every right to have and express his views, so long as he doesn't try to force them upon other people by supporting an anti gay marriage campaign. Thinking gays shouldn't be allowed to get married doesn't necessarily make someone a bigot. Telling other people that you think gays shouldn't be able to marry doesn't necessarily make someone a bigot. But actively trying to stop gays from getting married does make you a bigot. You don't see gays engaging in campaigns that are trying to stop the government from allowing christian marriages, or straight marriages, or saying they think marriages performed by Catholic priests are wrong, or immoral.
I'm sure Racists and anti-segregationists said the same things in the 60's and 70's, when Racial equality was becoming the norm and supporting racist beliefs got you osttrisized. "Oh, us poor christians are being oppressed ! I can't even tell a nigger in a coffee shop to get me a drink without getting mean stares! POOR ME! Wahwahwahwahwah!!! You humanitarian are so mean! :("
