View Full Version : Anyone else enjoy retro storage mediums?

For some reason, I have recently developed a renewed interest in stuff like DVDs and CDs (I think it's fair to consider these pretty retro now) as well as other more obscure mediums of media storage like MiniDisc and even cassettes. There's a great channel on YouTube called Techmoan that reviews things like this.

I feel like with DVDs, the fact that it's in low quality plus the physicality of placing an object into a player, hearing it spin, kind of provides a sort of separation from reality that I like. It's sort of the opposite of desiring immersion. That's at least my going theory of why I enjoy watching them more sometimes than modern quality media.

On a related note, does anyone else feel that the world got more depressing after about 2012? Seems like people don't talk to each other nearly as much anymore. Kind of like societal robots walking around.

Anyone else into this sort of thing?

Do you still use it?

It is about 25 years old like brand new.
I have CDs in it. Might have played them
a few times but don't use it much. Now I
have a Bose system. Crazy how things
change over time. I have a few cassettes
and a player but hardly ever use it.

Your CD player is older than you? Dang. That's cool though that you still have that stuff. I found a dude that still makes new cassettes for his music. http://www.eox.no

Pretty wild. An echo of the past.

When my GrandDad passed he left me a
lot of his music and equipment. Some of
it is my Dads also.

Even I use digital medias the most, at home we also have old vinyl discs we buy at garage sales etc from time to time.

There we also bought an old gramophone, which works very well after its restoration.

Nevertheless, it's a very hard to get used to sound experience to play a vinyl disc like Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" or something similar on it.

On the other hand, it is pretty perfect for the music of Harry Belafonte (Day-O/Banana Boat etc). Or some certain Jazz and Ska music.

All in all, it fits very decoratively in our Living room like office, which we furnished in the style (kinda) of a British gentleman's club of the colonial era.

I'm definitely intrigued by old mediums and technology. We still watch and even purchase a few DVD movies to this day, but otherwise it's all digital. My uncle still keeps his old VHS player alive and watches movies on it. :P

no idea. I believe a text file or a maximum of a picture in 250kb size.

I'm super old school, so I personally love VHS and cassettes (even if they are infuriating), vinyl, and ofc cds and dvds

I still buy cds and dvds

Idk why

Edit:

I'd also like to add that I still own some floppy discs (the small ones) from when I was little, and my mom has our walkmans (like the cassette ones LMAO)

The CD and DVD formats are not retro, they still sell those so it's not obsolete.

I guess only a teen could say something like that haha, video game consoles still use optical discs even if digital is taking over.

Now analog definitely is retro though but there's still good reasons to buy music on CD. Like the fact you don't have to download it and it's better than MP3 quality.

I think CDs and DVDs are definitely on their way out. I feel like they're kind of like VHS in the late 90s/early 2000s at this point. They are absolutely trumped by streaming. They're at least on the cusp of being retro imo. Tech moves faster than it did in the 90s.

I actually tested the quality thing on a good ass speaker system and it was pretty difficult to tell the difference between FLAC and mp3. Like there is an audible difference, but I don't find it that much better than Spotify mp3 streaming quality.

It might not be retro just yet, but optical discs are getting old for sure. The thing with streaming and digital though is not everyone has a 1 GB per second unlimited internet connection so buying a physical version is still worthy and that's why there's 4K Blu-ray movies.

I can even hear the difference between different MP3 compression on a normal sound system, so it does make a difference for me. I don't mind 320kbps MP3 on a smaller system, but there's no way I'm listening to MP3 files on my home theater. CD at the very least then if not HD audio.
