View Full Version : Do you ever look to a higher power in times of distress?

I'm agnostic, but an agnostic theist- I believe in a higher power(/s), but don't think we can know for sure that they exist.

I haven't really explored my spirituality, so I don't pray to anyone specific in times of trouble, but I definitely do pray when I need strength or answers. Maybe it's silly, but even if it's just a placebo effect, I'm fine with that.

Does anyone else, religious, spiritual, or not pray to a higher power when you're in a bad place (mentally or otherwise)?

I have been brought up attending church regularly and am a sincere believer, and yes I do pray when I'm emotionally troubled, as well as in thanksgiving for all the wonderful things in my life.

There are times when I go for a long walk out in the woods behind my house and literally spend hours laying on a large flat stone, looking up, meditating and praying. I've even spent entire nights in my favorite spot (my parents know where I am and approve). Yes, it helps. I don't only pray in church.

Good for you. I'm glad it helps you :)

I'm not a believer in any kind of such stuff. Although I never really experienced times of distress, I just say, I would rather network with others to overcome those cruel times. And in case if it's more about to find mentally balance, I would meditate and connect myself to my innerverse.

I'm not a believer either, and if I was to look to some kind of a higher power to solve my own problems I would feel like I'm relinquishing my responsibility.

I do occasionally, but I don't believe in God. I'm an agnostic. I was raised Baptist but dropped it in like ninth grade. I was never super spiritual because my family rarely attended church.

I pray in times of very great struggle, though it becomes less and less. It's more of a call into the void. I think it's very unlikely that anyone is listening. I usually get more out of just trying to be my own comforter or talking to friends.

I don't waste my time on such nonsense. When tjere is some distress or other bad shit happening in my life, here's what I do - I dismante the situation to details, I track down the part in which something went wrong, then I look for a path on how something went to that part in which something went wrong, then I make a path using logical anlysis of said situation to a sitation where I can make things right and how to prevent the same wrongful thing from happening again... Then I fuse everything back together, I try to fix as much as I could come up with to make things right and just overcome all mess that was created by that unpleasant situation and store the experience so that I would never make the same mistake again...

It's not a waste of time if it helps people emotionally cope with their situation.

I believe and trust in God.
No explanation necessary.

Yeah. I go to church off and on and i don't usually pray by myself, but like at the church youth group they will ask for prayer requests and stuff and i share about my struggles during those times. I dunno, there is something kinda special about knowing that more than one person is thinking about me in support at the same time, lifting me up, and my being able to do the same for them and prayer is a way to do that.... if that makes sense?

Please, pay attention to details in texts. I specificaly added word "I" in the text. I didn't say "Don't waste your time"... I talked specificaly about me, myself and how I see this " miraculous" praying, not about anybody who does it...

You sound very aggressive in your posts. I do pay attention to detail. You called the practice "nonsense." I think that's disrespectful and inconsiderate of emotions.

It is a nonsense in my eyes and in my world view... If it triggers you - not my fault. If you find it disrespectful - see if I care...

I'm not a believer in anything and don't pray I've been through hard times in my life but never looked to a higher power. I feel like too many people use a god or higher power as a excuse for there actions or as a reason not to work on them selfsinstead asking someone else to help you through your troubles.

but I understand some peoples need for a higher power when in need but there comes a point where you need to get through on your own or knowing when to get help from friends and family and not hoping for a higher power to solve it for you.

That is so true. Couldn't have said it better

So you don't care about disrespecting people. What a guy.

Makes perfect sense to me, because the teen group at my church does exactly the same thing. We support each other by being there for each other and praying for each other.

For those of us who do believe, it works for us. :) And I totally respect the right of others not to believe, if that works for them. Whether any individual chooses to believe or not to, seems to often be dependent on how their family sees it and whether they have been brought up since they were little to attend church frequently.

Respect is earned and not freely given... And yes, I don't care about people much, I don't care whether they are going to be offended or not after I say something - I am not afraid of speaking my mind and I don't give three shits what people are gonna think of me. If you enjoy being afraid not to offend anyone and bending for everyone's ridiculous requests - please, do it.

High power, spirits, ancient beings and totems

Not when in distress so much
More when I need extra strength or inspiration

When I pray it is for other people, coz I think praying God only when you need something is selfish

Which is fair. Occasionally I'll keep other people in my prayers, usually I just try to give emotional support, because I feel that's a better use of my emotions.

But it's never a bad thing to keep other people in your thoughts.

Sometimes I try to but I often find it difficult to believe in any higher power (and look to a higher power in times of distress), in large part due to past experiences I've had in my life. Maybe (and hopefully) that will change sometime in the years or decades to come. I don't know.

Yes; what else can you do beyond what you can do on an individual level? If you’re a thinker and your doing all you can, the rest is up to a higher power.

Until less than a year ago i never had been to church or said a prayer. Just hadn't thought of it so no turning to a higher power.
Last November my new mum went to church with a neighbour and i ended up going with her.
I have had a lot of issues and caused a lot of problems to for my new parents who adopted me. Apparently these neighbours had been praying for me for years.
Maybe selfish but i did pray a couple of times when i was in a mess after I had been to church.....and strange "coincidences" happened to make things better.
Got involved with the church youth group and go to church regularly now. Yes i do and will pray when things are tough but know its selfish to just do that so pray for others and also say thankyou prayers.
Very definitely not a saint and not got everything clear in my mind but reckon there is something to prayer.
Ok many people will say the coincidences were just that and thats ok and not going to quarrel over it but for me its a good thing.

I'm not at all a religious person but I also do believe in a God. I just don't go to Church or anything. My dad's side of the family grew up Catholic, my mom's side were Southern Baptists. Both my parents were Atheist or Agnostic. Being a queer individual like myself, I saw the negative side of religion at a fairly young age. If I were to associate myself with any religion, I would say I'm Christian.

I've prayed to God many times such as when my mom had her unexpected death 3 years ago. At that time, I didn't know what was gonna happen to not only her, but to myself, or to my family. It was a super hard loss for all of us.

I do look to God it times of distress and pray for him to help the situation and tend for my needs. God takes care of me and my needs.
