So am I. The first one is an horror cult classic now. It was mostly trashed by critics because of the violence and the sequels are underrated, even though they really did went down in quality. Jigsaw was kind of lame if you ask me but they just won't stop making sequels.

Damn I thought Jigsaw was really good!! How they brought back the old guy for it and threw in that crazy twist at the end!! It opened the door for more movies

Not a big fan of what the new writers and directors did but I'm not saying it's bad. The twists were really hairbrained this time around though.

Not a big fan of Saw. I don't tend to be big on horror movies which are just gory rather than scary - not that jump-scare movies are very good either. Tbh I think horror is the genre where it seems like actors and directors and companies don't tend to try very hard. And a lot of it is just sequel after sequel of schlock. Like I don't think any of the Saw movies have ever even reacher 50/100 on Metacritic.

Heavens, did Jigsaw really make that much money to warrant yet another Saw movie?

Ha yea, i only ... saw (lol sry)... the first one and wasn't feeling it. I sure didn't see that twist coming though! Whoa!!!

Yea the thing with most horror movies is they can be made cheap so it is not hard to make a profit. Pultost probably is not far off. We will probably see 20! :P

Why we got like dozens of found footage films after the Blair Witch Project. They're dirt-cheap to make and if they happen to take off they can make a lot of money. At least the first Blair Witch Project was a properly creepy film (I love the use of darkness, sound and the unknown). The found footage movies that came in its week were often not so much.

Jigsaw cost 10 millions to make, I wouldn't call that cheap. It also made 10 times its budget. Saw won a Guinness record for being the highest grossing horror series ever.

50% is still half of positive reviews so it's controversial at worst. Also Jigsaw has a 90% audience score on rotten tomatoes so who cares if critics didn't like it.

I liked the first couple but then it got dumb. Just creative ways to kill people with no real plot.

10 million isn't really that much when it comes to major movies.

You're thinking of RottenTomatoes. Metacritic is an average of the scores. Audience scores are basically worthless because: a) you're counting fans who'll rate it 10/10 no matter what (which is why like Avengers Infinity War and then Endgame both were once like the 5th highest rated movies on IMDB by users); b) the sample is compromised by mostly being people who chose to pay money and see the film - compared to critics where it is their job; c) general audiences don't have the same experience as movie critics do at critiquing movies. That's not to say that people are wrong for liking a movie but I'm always going to trust critic scores way, way more than I'll ever trust audience scores.

10 million is a substantial budget. It sure ain't big budget movies, but that's way more than your average low budget horror films.
Rotten Tomatoes is an aggregator website just like Metacritic. Audience score is an indicator of fan appreciation which is way more important than critics. Filmmakers aim to please their audience, not those who are actually paid to see their movies. Experience is irrelevant. An opinion is an opinion like any other. And I would trust the opinion of an horror fan on an horror film prior to critics that trashed the movie because of the violence and sadism.

They're both aggregator websites but their numbers mean different things. Rotten tomatoes is the percentage of positive reviews while Metacritic is an average of those reviews. So if a movie got a 2/5, 3/5, 3/5, 3/5 and 4/5 from five reviews it's Rotten Tomatoes score would be 80% because 80% of them are positive but its Metacritic score would be 60/100 because that is the average of the reviews. So the effect is that most well-reviewed movies have higher RT scores than Metacritic scores and most bad-reviewed movies have lower RT scores than Metacritic scores.
But I'm not a fan of the Saw movies. I'm not a fan of most franchises and a lot of the movies that I watch are just on their own rather than being in a franchise or sequels. So it is not useful at all for me to know what fans think about the film. I just want to know if I'd be likely to enjoy the movie and the critic review is going to be much more useful for that because they're going to be more objective about it. Filmmakers usually either aim to make money - which sometimes means pandering to fans - and/or make a movie with some artistic merit.
And plenty of violent and even sadistic movies have high critic scores.

Then you wouldn't have been a fan of The Shining when it came out either, since it was panned by critics then. Many movies that are considered great classics now such as Blade Runner were trashed by critics at first, so you basing yourself on critics to watch a movie is misguided. Also most of the negative reviews I read about Saw were ranting at the violence in it. You might wonder why some films have such high audience score however. What's the big fuss about.

By the way, this is an insult to all horror filmmakers. Stanley Kubrick, Wes Craven and George A. Romero must be rolling in their graves.

But usually they get it right. And to the credit of critics, they re-evaluated those movies. Which is still much more useful than hearing that everything is almost always great because you only listen to people who have chosen to see the movie or are fans.

I never said there weren't exceptions. I meant in general.

There's no right or wrong, it's all opinions. Crtics always re-evaluate movies. I bet you in 20 years from now Saw will be considered a classic. If you base yourself on audience score the last season of GOT certainly wasn't great, so your point is moot.
There's a lot of great horror movies.

I said that it was opinions before. My point was that in choosing whether or not to see a film, the critic score is vastly more useful for a general audience and that the audience score is usually worth disregarding completely for a general audience. That's because the last season of Game of Thrones really made things pretty apparent and fans had the early seasons to compare to which were actually really great television. And I don't see how an exception invalidates my point. The vast majority of audience scores are inflated because of selection bias and fan bias.
I never said there weren't great horror movies. I meant that in comparison to most other genres, there's a higher ratio of bad movies to good.

My point was that audience score is still valid.

I'm not saying that they're wrong for liking the movie, I just think the audience score is pretty bad for comparing movies to each other or for whether a general audience will appreciate it - especially a more discerning general audience.
There are a ton of crap movies in every genre. I just find that horror tends to have a higher percentage of the movies be crap or meh compared to good than for most genres.

It's one of the best twist endings I ever seen and the final twist in The Final Chapter was mind blowing.

This kinda reminds me of an episode of Two and a Half Men, where Alan has a nightmare about being old and working at a movie theater. In the background there's a poster for Saw 33. :P
