Here is a quick poll for people 16 and above for chest sizes so that I can work out another average.

Where there is a gap in the Poll
40"-42" is actually 38"-40"
42"-44" is actually 40"42"
44"-46" is actually 42"-44"

I have a 50" chest and I am 20. So I wear a large size shirt and in some cases an extra large.
