Hey I'm going to high school next year and have to have a physical sometime in the summer before school starts. I haven't been to the doctors for a while and never for an official physical. Can anyone tell me what usually happens at them if they're just for school? Also does puberty stuff usually come up because stuff has started happening for me with that too.

Physicals aren't too stressful but they can be. Here's what they will do.
First they will get your weight, height, blood pressure and maybe check your eyesight and your hearing
Next the doctor/nurse will probably ask about vaccines you may/may not have gotten because of school.
Then they will ask you to strip down maybe all the way or just to your underwear. Then they will do like checking your muscles, bones, and all of that across your whole body is good.
Then the most embarassing part is when they check your dick and your nuts.
They are only checking for hernias and any problems dealing with your crotch and you might get hard from the doctor touching you which I have had happen. The doctor is completely ok with that happening so don't be embarassed even if you have a female doctor. After that they will tell you to put on your clothes and your pretty much done.
Hope this helps

Oof yeah this is what I heard from some people here but I couldn't tell if they were just trying to scare us.
Are your parents in the room for all this? And you mentioned female docs, do you get a choice if you want male or female?
Thanks for the info even though it kinda makes me nervous hah.

You have the choice of having your parents in there or not. It's completely up to you, usually unless you have other medical issues.
In the case with which doctor, that's sort of yes and no. Yes in the sense that you can prefer to have a male doctor but maybe no because its based off your parent's insurance. If your parents health insurance maybe only allows certain doctors its possible that you will be forced to have a female doctor but it depends.
Usually though there are male doctors to be able to do the physical.

This is pretty accurate for every physical I have had. As to the question of parents in room and male/female doctor:
Parents -- this is normally their decision, talk to them if you don't feel comfortable with them being in the room. My dad takes me and stays in the waiting room until the doctor is done with the exam and then comes in for results/discussion.
Since the doctor I see for everything is male, there is no issue for me. But if you would rather have a male doctor, ask your parents to help with this.

This is just like my physical. I usually did them with my younger brother so either mom or dad would be in the room. My last one I was by myself and no parent. First time can be a little scary but really nothing to worry about. The check of my penis and testicles is usually quick, she does pull back my foreskin. And last one she showed me how to examine my testicles to check for lumps that could be cancerous.

Ok sounds like I should mention to my parents about going in alone and whether it's a male or female or if I have a choice. If I can pick, it sounds like male is better? I'm not sure hah.
Is there anything else I should know or do/not do going in?

well for your first one you may want a male doctor, you'll prob be more comfortable. Just remember nothing they'll do is painful just maybe a little embarrassing the first time is all

Ok it's good it won't hurt. How long is that part? Is there anything I can do to make it less embarrassing? Also do they usually ask or talk about puberty stuff?

it's like 20 seconds maybe. less if you don't have a foreskin. maybe close your eyes when they check your testicles, it's to see if you have a hernia. she does ask if I have any questions she can answer but i usually ask my dad about puberty and sex stuff

So typically when I go, they start with the normal stuff. Height. Weight. Blood pressure. Temperature. Then they make you change into a gown. The from their they will check my back or spine. And take a listen at lungs. They check the skin visually for any abnormalities. They check range of motion from joints and reflexes. Then last they check you private area. Typically they check the penis for anything that shouldn't be there. Then they check you testicles for any lumps or abnormalities and then the physical part is over. Then usually for me they finish with a bunch of surveys that I have to take without parents in the room basically asking about if you've taken drugs and ask about mental health issues. Then they ask about questions regarding if you are sexually active. They also tell you that the surveys are completely anonymous and you parents will never know even if you confess to something bad and if you intend to hurt yourself. And that's pretty much it.

My experience is pretty much the same, except I’ve never had to stand and cough for a hernia check. I’m usually lying down for the genital exam and my doctor raises my hips and slides my underwear down himself. I also have to turn over for my doctor to look at my anus. I’ve noticed that as you get older the doctor begins to put on gloves rather than just washing his hands to examine your junk.

I think laying sounds better, less exposing maybe but the butt part sounds super awkward. And hopefully they use gloves because that seems more impersonal/medical I guess.

It’s really not too bad, they just kind of spread your ass. I’ve had it worse where at my previous doctor I had my knees put up against my chest instead of just being told to lie on my stomach.

Were your parents in there for that? Hopefully they at least look away or something.
Also, you said before about the gloves thing, do you remember how old you were when they switched?

You’ll probably get hard during the exam when the doctor starts examine your dick and balls during the cough test for a hernia. Especially if it’s a female doctor.

I really hope not, that'd be really embarrassing. Has that happened to you?

I think it’s a normal reaction when you or someone else touch your penis.
And the doctor doesn’t care of it I think

They will do the normal things like check your height and weight. They will check your blood pressure and temperature and listen to your heart and lungs. The physical part of the exam will be to press and check your abdomen and other areas. Then the part where you have to be naked or lower your shorts. They will check for a hernia then check your penis and testicles and if you are uncut they will retract your foreskin back and then closed again. No big deal that's about it. Don't be worried.

Yeah. It has. I started getting a boner before I even pulled my boxers down. They were starting to tent out. The doctor just said it was normal and to not worry about it. When she was done, she told me to put my boxers back on and get dressed. But I was still hard.

I think I'm going to request a male doctor so hopefully that won't happen. Even if it's normal it still sounds award hah.

My dad typically tags along, I don’t really mind anymore though. The doctor usually says something like “Okay dad please look away” but he usually watches anyways. As for the gloves I was around 13 when he started wearing them, but I think it depends on your genital development, especially when it comes to pubic hair. I don’t remember him wearing them at 14 but that could’ve just been a mistake.

Typically my mom would stay but when it comes to any "exposing" part see will look away or ask if I want her to leave. Sometimes even the doctor will them to wait outside. Honestly I don't mind if she sees anything. She did make me  I think it's pretty safe. I mean I put down some gnarly stuff in the surveys and they didn't tell my parents anything so yeah

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I found out that my appointment is next week (sooner then I thought) and it's with a guy. I'm still kinda nervous about it but I'm glad I have a better idea of what's coming. I'll update after but if anyone has any last minute tips let me know!
