View Full Version : Far away from home?

If you plan on going to a college or university, would you want to be super close to home (i'd say close enough that you could easily live at your parents' place), or farther away (more than an hour long car ride)?
For me, since I plan on going to community then transferring, I want to live at my dad's place for community college and then I'm probably going to go to UC Riverside or Le Corden Bleu 400 miles away.
I wouldn't want to move to the other side of the country or internationally though.

Since I don't know what I want to do, I'm going to start with CC and then transfer to another university in the district that partners with the CC and accepts the transfer credits. So if it works out like this, I'm living at home either way, which is ok because I'd be saving a crap-ton of money even after factoring in fuel/travel expenses to the CC/university.
Just about everyone that I know; friends, family, neighbors, regardless of if they went away to college or stayed at home, still live with their parents until they're in the late 20's/early 30's and have a decent job and plan on getting married.
... but if money wasn't an issue, I'd be out of here. For sure.

If I had the option, I would probably get as far away as possible. That said, if I had the opportunity to attend College of Charleston in my hometown, I'd take it. So I'm not sure really.

Right now, I live in Minnesota where I hate the weather and the lack of stuff. As soon as I get the chance, I'm moving to southern California.

I'm ditching Texas for another state as soon as possible. I'll probably come back though.

I'm so tired of the cold and BS here I want to be as far from this state as I can get.

I'm planning on going to NYC if everything goes well which is 4-5 hours drive from here. I would love to go somewhere very far, maybe in another country, but in favor of my career going to the city with all the theaters and big name actors, directors, writers etc NYC is the place to go.

Depends on which university I would go to. I'd like to go to Stanford which is definitely a plane ride, but I'd also like to go to CU Boulder which is an hour an a half away. But I wouldn't want to intentionally move away from my parents I love them a lot.

I go to uni 2 hours away and for me that's the perfect distance but it's a bit different in england just because everything is a lot nearer and as I live in the centre of the country without going international I can't really get much further than 4 hours anyway.
However even if I went to uni in the same city I would have still lived in halls some of my friends have actually done that and I just know I would not have had the same uni experience if I was still living at home.

It's going to be a moderate (though literally cross-country for Ireland) distance from my family when I'm in university. I'm not comfortable with the idea but change is to be accepted and I'll be fine with it in like a month. University's a big change anyways distance goes with it at least a bit.

I live three hours away from home, and by a cinch I'm not living six. It's nice to have them near in an emergency or when you're not used to the place. After you get the hang of living alone then you want to visit less, once a month...

Haha I love how you write your poll. I'm going on a "See ya suckers!" very soon and personally I can't wait to vanish from this country. A total of 28 hours of plane ride away, with no relatives or friends at all. WOO HOO

I'd like to stay on the East Coast, preferably Northeast, since I've always liked it. Although if I had the opportunity to go cross country or leave the country, I'd take it, just not because my parents though.

Far, far away. Preferably several countries away (I have it planned) though not sure if it will be financially possible (not for the next 10 years anyway).

If I'm say, 1 hour away, it wouldn't make a difference to me if I was 5 hours away

I hope to go to Carnegie Melon or another similar school so a short-moderate car ride is about how far

Since my parent's job require them to move and I'm so not studying in the country I am currently living in an airplane ride away it is. Of course we could unexpectedly cross paths and I wouldn't mind that anyways, but that all depends on many things.

I'm attending college at home (NYC) starting this fall, so I'm staying home but after the first year im moving closer to school with a bunch of friends, so I'm always gonna be close but not too close to home.

My college is 5 minute drive away from home. If I moved it would only be so I don't have to go up the hill as I always get a taxi up because I think my legs have a problem with the walking :kitty:

I'm precisely 5006 miles from home currently. When I initially moved out, I was 4204 miles. Not a huge difference, lol. Honestly, I wish I had the convenience of being able to go home more than once a year. You can't imagine how much I miss my parents. I'm lonely and anxious. But I don't belong there; I don't think I ever did. It's tough, but worth it to me. I met great people, found a town I at least want to spend the next decade in if not longer, where I can relate to others and I don't feel like a complete outsider. And it's so much fun to go abroad for uni. I know it isn't for everyone, but it's a great experience.

Close to home I would cry every single day if I was separated from my mom.

I think I would be able to handle 4-9 hours away, but that's really pushing it. Luckily since I can't afford a high end school nor do I have the grades for a full scholarship, I'll be living at home and attending the Community College. Fun stuff.

While I'd love to stay close to my mother, I'd probably end up going to university in a far off country.

I can't really answer the poll because I don't really care. How far away my dad isn't doesn't impact at all upon where I move to really. I'm living with my girlfriend's family at the moment and they happen to live 5 minutes away from my dad, and my university is about an hour away by bus.
If I had a good job opportunity further away (even other country) I would probably move there, but that would depend more on my girlfriend than my dad.
