:love:Today is Valentine's Day.
A day when couples express their love and florists, restaurants and chocolatiers make a lot of $$$$.

But people seem very polarized about it.
Some people love it.
Some, if they're not in a relationship, feel bad today.
Some who are in relationships just don't observe it, as it's a commercial celebration.

What are your thoughts about Valentine's Day?
And what will you be doing today?

p.s.: In the US, the typical celebration is the boy bringing the girl flowers and chocolates and going out to dinner. Is it celebrated differently elsewhere? Are there countries which don't celebrate VD?

It's a Hallmark holiday all the way, but so many people have gotten into it that it became a major event. No doubt the florists and candy shops make lots of money from it.

I like having a special day to celebrate with my girlfriend, and some boys I've dated also go out of their way to make it nice for me.

But the amazing thing THIS Valentines day is that I've finally got my band together and we've had enough time to rehearse and get really good at what we do. I'm lead guitar and lead singer. We specialize in 50's-60's stuff mostly, also classic country and rock.

Last night we played at the church teen group's Valentines dance party, and it was awesome to be able to make it special for all the others who attended. Gonna be doing more of this.........

And today just for Valentines day I dressed up to attend school, I've got on a vintage looking pink poodle skirt with a black poodle, a black sweater with a huge red heart, little white ruffle socks with white and black saddle shoes, chunky red heart earrings and a matching bracelet, and a black hair clip with a huge red rose attached to it. Even put on bright red lipstick, a first for me at school since I never wear makeup. I checked out pictures online and look like a girl from the late 1950's!

I'm getting lots of compliments from the other kids and my teachers, so it's a feel good day for me!!!!!!

I have been in a relationship since 2016 with my boyfriend and we certainly have never gone over the top. The way I see Valentines Day is that it is just another day to do and show the same affection that I should be showing to my boyfriend every other day. So in the past we have spent a quiet evening together watching a movie and either going to a place to eat or ordering food out and that is about it. No gifts, chocolates, flowers, all that jazz. Like I said in other threads this year will be the first year we will not be able to be together because he is on the other coast at college. So we will share a nice conversation over Skype and say our goodnights as we usually do each evening. Sure I wish he was here, but college is important and there will be many more days where we can be together.

Today I expressed my love for myself by buying a box of sweets and eating them all.

I appreciate a gift/message/whatever more when it's NOT given on Valentine's Day. That way the person who gives hasn't been reminded by commercial ads, but has genuinely thought about me. And that counts way more for me than an "oh right, tomorrow's Valentine's Day, I need to buy my partner something".

Never had a date on valentine's day so I don't have any experience, but I guess I'd just spend the day with her and probably buy some flowers just for the sake of the tradition..

We don't celebrate Valentine's day because its like Easter, or Halloween, or Mother's and Father's day, its just another bullshit commercial holiday for businesses to take advantage of in our capitalistic overconsumption society.

When you're in love with someone, you prove your love almost everyday. No need gifts even if it's alaways nice. Love is in words as well as acts that goes to the heart. Today, my bf gave me a red rose. The last year it was pink. The language of flower is romantic to me.

I basically agree.
Who are 'we;' you, or your country?
Btw, what country is north of the UK?

I figured as much; I know you're Canadian. I was being facetious.

The US can legitimately be called many derogatory things, but a banana republic it definitely is not.

Since VD is over, it doesn't matter if this thread goes off in a tangent.

Which do you hold more responsible for this, the businesses or the consumers?

I think it's fun. I feel nothing negative about it, despite not being in a relationship.

I had fun eating candy on Thursday :)

I like the idea of a day celebrating being a loving person towards others.
As for what I did on Thursday, I went to a coffee shop with a friend and hung out, and this random lady gave me a paper heart with a smiley face on it, so that was sweet. :)

I don't feel anything negative about it either, but I don't like the pressure people seem to feel to buy into the commercialism of it.

I had one gf and I'd take her to dinner, get her flowers and chocolates, but specifically not on February 14 and she loved that idea.
But another gf wanted to be part of the celebration and all the excitement the commercial enterprises make it out to be. So for her, I did V.D.

A couple years ago we had a tremendous snow storm on February 14th. Once the roads were cleared, the mayor of a city in our region asked all the people who cancelled dinner plans, didn't buy flowers/chocolates, etc because of the storm, to celebrate Valentine's Day that weekend, so the businesses didn't lose substantial revenue (it was of questionable value to the florists). I thought it was wrong of him to push the commercialization of the holiday.

I like valentine's day as a day to celebrate your appreciation for people in your life that you love whether that's a bf/gf or friends or family.

Spend time with them and do something they enjoy even if it's something simple with going to a nice dinner or watching their favorite movie but it depends on the person.
