How much does a movie’s score/soundtrack matter to you when you judge it? For me, I feel like an otherwise forgettable score won’t necessarily detract from a movie, but a great one can really elevate a film.

Scores of today's movies seem to sound pretty much the same. They do they job, but I forget them right away, as opposed to older movies (Star Wars, E.T, Jaws etc.). Anyway, no movie would be quite the same without a background score of some sort, even the forgettable ones.

I like the soundtrack of a movie. As above, the older scores like Harry Potter or Jurassic Park are more memorable than movies nowadays.

scores to me can eather really improve the movie, really do nothing, or, in the case of the ones that sound like they're drowning in lava, really hamper the movie

It sort of comes down to the rise and fall of particular great composers - John Williams (who is responsible for ET, Jaws, Harry Potter, Star Wars) etc is a fantastic composer and so many of his movies have iconic scores. Same goes for Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Inception, Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar etc) amongst many others. Films that plan to use score to set a tone and scene will hire skilled composers; if the director has no set vision for how a score fits in, hey won't go to as much effort.

When i read this title line, i thought score as in.... 8/10? Haha. But yea, can you imagine Star Wars opening crawl without that music??? Music can sell a scene, but on opposite thought sometimes a scene has been equally impact when given total silence.
