I've never been in such a situation, but I would arrange a signal with the one I would be sharing a room with. Either a text message, a sock on the doorknob, tell them "please don't enter the room for an hour", or any other means.

For most of my life I shared a room with my older sis Megan. My family also has an open door policy meaning that all bedroom doors stay wide open at all times. We are never allowed to fully close any door unless there are visitors present but there's one exception. We have a signal that we use in our house, if you put a scrunchie on the doorknob and partly close that door, then other family members know not to come in the room without knocking first.

When I lived in a single room dorm my freshman year with a roommate there were times we'd directly say when we needed the room to ourselves, but mostly we just let each other know when we were going to be gone, with the obvious subtext being that it'd be a good time to have someone over or private time.

When my sister and I shared a room, we would just let each other know when we had company over. Or sometimes we would forget and if we happened to walk in, the walker-in would apologize and leave.
