I went to 2 parties this weekend. What is going on with so many girls being "Bi" or Lez". I got hit on by more girls then guys. I was the only one sober there. The guys were I have to be nice and not upset anyone. Not manly. They had beards but not like the guys I knew down south. So many guys when I talked to them I asked what kind of car would they like. I was told why have a car when you can uber? What is that? Everyone I knew in the "Backwoods" in NC knew how to drive by the time they were 16.
So strange with the guys now.

Times are changing, the generation before us is the last one to drive. With autonomous technologies, you'll be able to ride on demand. I reckon driving will be outlawed. Much better for urban life and the environment. The fact is, an automobile sits idle in a garage a minimum of 95 percent of it's lifespan and all of our urban areas are designed around cars, especially in big cities, people spend up to 3 hours in traffic. As a comparison, I'd like to share this picture:
https://i.ibb.co/2v424pK/carbusbike.jpg
Required amount of space for the same amount of people with cars, public transport and bicycles.
In many places around the world, owning a car is a stupid status symbol. (Like owning an expensive smart phone.)
In the United States, automobile transport was encouraged because there's a really strong lobbying effort by car manufacturers, it benefited the industry greatly since the invention of cars. So people don't really use other forms of transport in the States. In terms of transport, the US is rather backwards, even though much of the new technology is being built there, hard to understand really..
In Europe, we have trains and in my country, people prefer bikes and public transport. Much better for public health and urban life in general.
So yeah, why own a car when you can get an Uber? There's absolutely no point. Ride sharing and public transport are much better alternatives and they'll continue to improve. Judging a man by his transport preference is rather outdated.
As far as sexual orientation goes, I think now people can be much more open about their choices, so they're choosing to live their lives a bit more out in the open. So I think that it's normal that you'd get hit on. You can just choose to say no.

I think maybe the reason why those guys are so nice is because of all that #metoo stuff. They're afraid that flirting will bite them in the ass 20 years later. About the car, or rather the lack thereof, it really depends on where you live. Here in Oslo where I live, you can easily live your whole life without a car, since there's public transportation all around, while there are cities, or rather villages, where you'd be fucked without a car. :P

I don't blame them though. The whole culture seems to be more materialistic compared to the other parts of the world. Also, having traveled quite a bit around different parts of the States, I can say that there's a big difference between major urban areas and some other places.
I can totally see why someone would find the lack of a car weird.

Sure, I understand that there are many places in the states when cars are necessary to move around, due to the lack of public transport, I just don't think it's right to look down on people who don't have a licence, almost as if it was a crime. :)

Well if in a city a car is impractical and expensive and a status symbol to most
In NC it’s more practical and normal to need one
Girls are obviously more open and guys in many places have been to smashed by politician correctness, fear of rejection and labelling to feel it’s ok to be dominant in the traditional way

Well later I will be going "winter" camping. We will have the 4wheelers to a pond and sleep out in the tents and ride the dirt roads on the 4wheelers. It is something my Dad and his friends families have done. If your not in the US the idea of riding in a 4wheeler or in big 4 wheel drive trucks might seem strange and well as going to a shooting range and having fun. Where I now live and the other places I lived you needed a car, truck or van to get around. This will be fun I guess it will be like 5 or 6 families. Can't wait.

Lack of a car is weird in the US because the travel system and size of the Nation, as compared to Europe, is massive. You are literally at the whim of convoluted bus schedules if you wish to travel very far, at any given moment, if you aren't flying or don't have a vehicle of your own. Comparing Europe and the US is generally apples to oranges.
As far as girls hitting on you... maybe there were just more gay or bi girls at that party.. and you are clearly attractive. Don't hate a girl for trying!:D

I've had girls hit on me and I take it as a compliment. It's unfortunate, but I think boys and some young men are too intimidated to approach girls at times and lets admit it, we girls are very seldom direct with guys...we tend to be subtle and drop hints. Guys aren't wired to communicate the way we do so the hints fly right over their heads most times. If I like a guy, I'm pretty direct.
As for cars...yeah, like Laura stated, in the U.S. (with the exception of big cities) a car is more of a necessity. My friends and I will Uber it if we've been drinking but usually we'll drive. I've lived in Europe and Asia and yeah, you really didn't need a car in ost places that I've been to.

Now some will get mad at me for saying that. But it is how I feel.
Kelly, didn't you answer a poll on this site that when you were asked about your sexuality you answered, "Don't care"? Uhm, I took that to mean you were bisexual. Did I misunderstand you? Not judging at all. I think girls are incredible. The female form is beautiful!

Women have luckily been liberated a great deal the last 50 years. We are (in most western countries) free to do the f... we want without being witch-hunted. And as social stuff now happens so quickly thanks to internet, it makes the world smaller. European women can easily follow American women and vice versa.
Many celebrity women are bi og lesbian and somehow they are celebrated for that particular quality often.
Being bi or lesbian has become a trend, so all girls have at least considered the possibility. They probably didn't years ago.

I think it's not a thing of being in the US or not, it's just, different locations requiring different solutions for transportation problems. I'm just trying to say that times are changing and even your "4-Wheelers" will be unnecessary in the very near future. You'll be able to request one on demand and go to wherever you want with it. So, one shouldn't look down on people because they choose alternate forms of more environment and urban-friendly modes of transport.

Well, laugh as you wish but it's where the world is headed. People are not defined by their cars and manual driving is currently on it's way out. In the future, you won't have to drive and someone won't be driving you. Having lived in Australia for 3 years, I have experienced life in central Sydney, me and my family were absolutely fine without a car.

So many things to address here, and lots of great replies already.
As far as so many girls being bisexual, I think we are just more open about it. Mom is a behavioral psychologist and she says that most girls are bisexual even if they don't openly admit it, they are open to dating both boys and girls. I've had several girls tell me they are testing the waters to determine whether they are straight or something else, and the only way they know how is by dating girls. Plus there are more than a few girls who have been hurt emotionally by boys, or worse, that have decided not to date boys any more because of their past experiences. So for all those reasons, you will find that many girls will approach you for a date even if you haven't shown any signs that you might be open to that yourself. I agree you ought to take it as a compliment, and just politely decline without hurting their feelings. I don't ask girls for dates, preferring to be the one being asked, but I know it must be hard for them to approach you so give them a break and be nice when you decline.
As far as guys being "manly" or not, I think the perception of what is masculine and what is feminine has become greatly blurred and is quite different depending on where one was brought up and where they happen to be currently. People who live in rural areas like me are going to have a very different idea on all of that compared to people brought up in big cities. Currently about 40% of the US population does NOT live in metropolitan areas, but they are equally divided among smaller towns generally pretty far away from larger cities, and rural areas which are mostly farmland or undeveloped. So what works in the cities does NOT work for us.
Someone mentioned mudding, which is lots of fun and both boys and girls as well as parents have a blast seeing who can get the muddiest in the shortest time. But that concept would probably make people who lived in cities think all of us were crazy. But a guy who didn't drive or own a car or truck would be seen as very strange and people would question why in a place like this.
Here, everyone learns to drive by the time they are 13 or 14 and gets their license and a car at 16. You couldn't possibly NOT own a vehicle if you lived here as an adult. There is no such thing as public transportation, no taxis, nothing except driving yourself where you need to be which is often 10 miles or more away. The closest shopping mall is an hour away in a bigger city and there's no way to get from here to there unless you do it on your own or go with a friend or family member. You couldn't survive without having your own car or truck. Since there are no sidewalks out in the country, walking along the side of the road or even riding a bike along the side of the road is dangerous at best in the daytime, and totally foolish to attempt at night.
I did a school report on the concept of Uber and Lyft, and the whole idea is ridiculous. I don't see why it would appeal to anyone, unless they are physically unable to drive for health reasons. It costs about $10 for an average Uber ride of about 6 miles, so if you needed to do that once a day and then return home, you would be in for $20 a day before giving the driver a tip, so that's well over $600 a month. In big cities it might cost even more.
I'm thinking of someone going to work 5 days a week, shopping on Saturday, Church on Sunday and back home from each. Most people need to go someplace and back home more than once a day. You can lease a nice car if you look around for well under $200 a month and even with insurance your costs are only another $100 or so per month. Figure $300 or $350. If you buy a used car for a few thousand, the payments can be just as low as leasing. So it costs about half as much to own your own car as to use Uber or take a taxi every day. You would have to be a real fool to even consider NOT owning a car under those economic conditions plus you have the car available 24-7 for whenever you need it.
The thought that even people in the middle of nowhere can request a "ride" and not own a car is ridiculous, one is NOT coming from a city an hour away to take you on a 5 or 10 mile ride. And there isn't enough demand for one in a town of a few thousand people or a rural area where the houses are half a mile or more apart to support anyone being in that business. And people take great pride even in building up their own 4 wheelers and trucks, wanting certain features and equipment on them. You couldn't possibly duplicate that with any on-call ride. Those who think the world is changing aren't taking those of us who want our own and are far away from the big cities into consideration. It simply can't ever happen here, the cost of providing that service would cause the owners of those vehicles to lose money big time on every call they responded to.
Lol, l've watched a few mudding videos on YouTube and it looks like great fun!
Try watching Alan Jackson's official music video of "Summertime Blues" which shows exactly what me and my family and friends do for fun with our 4-wheelers and pickup trucks. This past year I've been driving our mudding truck a lot and having a blast!!!!!! And yes we get out of the trucks sometimes and into the mud, ending up with huge mud fights all in fun of course, and at the end they use hoses to squirt us off and we have to wash the truck windows before being able to drive home.
Anyone who lives in a place where a mudding field is available ought to go watch if not participate, you would love it! Driving 50-60 MPH through the mud is totally a unique experience when you can't see where you are going clearly and have no idea how the terrain under the mud is going to be.

Katie2003 you are so right about country living. We camped last night and it rained off and on. Then this morning we went cold weather mudding. Then we did a a bunch of shooting. Yes they had rules and I was taught how to use everything that I shot. We had a big fire last night where everyone brought their Christmas trees and they went up at Midnight. It is the first time I even did anything like that. It was fun. I will be learning to drive by the people I meet last night. Most have a bunch of land or farms. I did the city stuff and I now hate it. My family lives in a Town but the family all has friends in what they call "The Boonies" . Oh some might think it was a bunch of Rednecks, all I can say it was a colorful bunch of all colors. It was fun last night now back to school in the morning. Before that I have to get the seats out of my car. Hey to all of you I hope you have a Great Happy New Year.

I think in the future is sadly slowly not going to be nedded to know how to drive. I like driving so I am not really happy about what the future holds for us regarding driving

Thank you, Brigje. I just don't get the "You're not a real man if you don't have a car" thing..
I live in UK. I can totally understand the concept of 'demand' transport but that will only work if (a) it's convenient and (b) it's affordable.
I don't drive yet obviously and I think my attitude to transport varies dramatically to that of my parents who have both been driving since they were 17/18 or thereabouts and therefore tend to rely on cars.
Certainly in Brighton there seem to be enough buses and trains around to get you to most places without too much hassle. The real problem in the UK as I see it, is that the streets and towns were never designed to accommodate the ever increasing numbers of vehicles and therefore we tend to have large traffic jams. This is also true of any large town or city.
I think I'm correct in thinking that the US and Australia have much larger spaces and widths of streets to allow alleged smooth transport operation although I'm sure that all large cities get as clogged up as ours do.
I'm also not sure that people take into account the REAL costs of running a car. Aside of the purchase price, there's insurance, car tax (in the UK anyway) and something over here called the MOT which is some yearly check to make sure the car is roadworthy. On top of that there is also depreciation - no car ever seems to go up in value - only down.
So although I'd like to drive one day soon, if the alternative (as suggested by TheBlue) were no more expensive and as convenient to jump on, I'd be silly not to consider it.

You're completely missing the point with this comment and I think your research is badly informed if you don't see the benefit of autonomous vehicles and not owning a vehicle.

Just some suggested reading.
I do understand that there's still time before people can give up their cars outside of urban areas, but to call the idea ridiculous is just not right because there are so many different parametres to consider.
