So basically I figured out my crush was the same age as me when I first met him as I creeped and saw a Facebook post on his page from his mom saying "Happy 20th birthday" a few months back. Anyways yesterday, we were having a conversation about movies and he was like "Wow, I must be old if I saw that movie at the theatre" and I was like "Wait, you're the same age as me right?" and he was like "How old are you?" And I was like "20." and he stopped for a second and was like "I'm 24."

Then the guy went into some long spill about how turning 21 wasn't as fun as he thought it was.

I don't even know how to confront him about this or if I even should. I don't understand why he would've lied to me especially about his age when it really doesn't affect me at all. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

Wait, this kind of sounds like a misunderstanding. He explicitly told you he was the same age as you? Because it sounds like you figured it out on your own, but then it turned out he was 24. If he deliberately lied, that's a huge red flag.

No, he didn't tell me directly. His mom posted on his facebook page to him Happy 20th birthday back in May. He also attended the same school & class as my cousin who is the same age as me as well.

But if his mom wrote happy 20th birthday just a few months ago...

How can he be 24? So is he lying about being older?

I don't get it, either way...sounds confusing lol. But yes, definite red flags if he can't even be honest about his age.

as Fiona and others have said, that's a red flag. Why lie about it. Tread carefully if you decide to go forward in the relationship.

Why not ask him directly? Like 'I thought you were 20, why did your mother wish you a happy 20th if you were actually hitting 24?'

I would give him the benefit of the doubt at least, and ask him about it. Maybe his mom typed his age wrong on Facebook or maybe the mistake was yours for assuming he was 20 without asking first.

Honestly, I shouldn't have typed this while at work as I worded it wrong

But yes, basicially I assume he lied about age.

Overall, he's a friendly guy. He's very shy & awkward normally which is a common observation from a lot of people but he hasn't given me any issues until this.

Why not ask him directly? Like 'I thought you were 20, why did your mother wish you a happy 20th if you were actually hitting 24?'

So here's the thing. We're not friends on Facebook. Me calling him out for that would be me admitting that I creeped on his facebook page and we work together too so it could create a big issue. The only thing I could do that wouldn't make me look insane is to probably mention that my cousin was in his graduating class.

I would give him the benefit of the doubt at least, and ask him about it. Maybe his mom typed his age wrong on Facebook or maybe the mistake was yours for assuming he was 20 without asking first.

That is a good perspective. Despite the odds being stacked high, it could be possible that it's all a misunderstanding.

Since you didn't ask him directly, I wouldn't say he lied. For all you know his mom could have dementia or something, or maybe wasn't paying attention and hit the wrong key, or maybe even making an inside joke. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless he truly mislead you, but it sounds more like a misunderstanding.

Maybe the happy 20th b-day from his mum was just a joke on her part??
