What factors determine the size of a girl's breasts when she begins puberty? I have been curious about why some girls have large breasts while other's have small breasts. What is the main factors that determine breast size?

Genetics have the most influence here, but the diet and the sports played can also influence breast size. There's no sport to make boobies bigger of course, but if you burn too much fat then you'll lose some size, just look at most olympic athletes. :rolleyes:

It's mainly genetic. I have concluded that I will likely never have boobs, as mine haven't developed at all and both my mom and big sis are flat chested. My doctor says it's unlikely that I would ever be very much different from their level of development, but once in a while a girl inherits genes from further back in the family tree and could be quite different from her mom or sisters.

In my case it isn't diet or lack of exercise, as I eat well and currently weigh nearly 200 pounds. There, I said it and it is what it is. I'm a big girl but a lot of my weight gain is due to the meds I'm on for my emotional issues. And all of my weight is in my tummy, hips and thighs. I also get plenty of exercise in gym class and swimming and usually walk home 4 miles from school every day.

Remember, when it comes to the genetic endowment, just because a characteristic is only expressed in one sex does not mean it is inherited only from the same-sex parent. In the same way boys can have a larger of smaller penis than their fathers or a different amount and distribution of hair than their fathers, because of genes inherited from their mothers, it is likely that a girl's breast size can be influenced by genes inherited from her father as well as from her mother.

Genetics do, as most everyone else has said. Hormones also do, which is ehy they’ll get bigger during puberty and then also during motherhood
