What is your opinion on zoos?

Do you like going to zoos?

Obviously there are bad zoos which everyone agrees should be shut down but do you think there is there such a thing as a good zoo?

I think that if the zoo is run well, and the animals are looked after then they're ok. Plus, they help protect endangered animals :)

I have been to a zoo as a child and was amazed. Sadly haven't been back since and would love to take my little brother so he experience the amazement that I experienced.

Forgot to say that I went to a zoo for the first time a few years ago and loved it. I have been back a few times since.
It sone of tho zoos which has modern enclosures so you can't always see the animals close up but I think that's fairer.

I've only been to one, but multiple times as it's in a city about an hour or so away. I liked it but have nothing else to compare it to.

There is some valid thinking on not putting animals in very restrictive settings. Who knows if they are able to think, or if they like or dislike the surroundings. Some seem to thrive on attention and like to perform for the public.

My grandparents live in Chester which has the largest zoo in the UK and I have been a few times. The main aim there is conservation and there are breeding programmes for many endangered species. The keepers genuinely love the animals too and look after them like they would their children. So, yes I am in favour of good zoos like this.

Zoos and conservatories based around protecting endangered animals and helping them repopulate and then reassimilate into an ecosystem are fine. Ones focused on tourism, and practice cruel and maltreatment of animals should be shut down.

I've been to a couple of zoos and i enjoyed them. I have been to a couple of smaller ones in France and Spain. The two biggest i have been too are Dover Zoo and Kharkiv Zoo in Ukraine.

I think they're fine as long as the animals are kept in open and clean enclosures and taken care of well.

I think it all depends on how the zoo is run! If it is clean and well updated and the enclosures are clean and spacious. Yes there is such thing.

I find zoos better than circuses. here they do not have to perform any tricks and are spared from dilemma and extermination by the people.
I have not been to the zoo for a long time.

catch 22, some zoo's don't interest me even though they do some research and stuff. if it's a larger zoo with larger enclosures or animals not native or common to the area then those interest me.

have been to a few that were labeled conservation centers (alaska) and they were cooler in my opinion as they weren't as diverse but their end goal was visible

Zoos are awesome. I love seeing all of the creation. I think animals are incredible. HOWEVER, I think it would be better if they were just out in the wild. (Except the nearly extinct animals)

Yes I think there are good zoos. But sometimes I can't help thinking, that tropical animals might be cold in our climate in the north.

Here you have a good Polish joke about Zoos, from what I knew it's come from old communist time, I heard it from one of my relatives, here we go:

The teacher brought a group of kids, younger teens, on a trip to the Zoo.
The cluster passes from the cage to the cage and finally reaches the chimpanzees. At this moment, the cheerful little monkeys start merry copulating with each other. The teacher first tries to shout at the animals, covers the children's eyes and pulls them away, but the children are so curious that nothing helps. In the end, the woman will notice the zoo employee. She runs to him and says: Please, Mister Can you do something with these chimpanzees! There are little children with me here! They should not watch such things! Maybe you're give them a banana, or something !? To what an employee with stoic calm saying : Do you would break in such a moment as if someone gave you a banana? :D

Yea i love the zoo! As long as the animals are responsibly cared for and happy. :)

Had a great time in the zoo on Boxing Day. Not many visitors so a chance to see the animals without crowds.
Feel a bit hypocritical as I think the animals there should be left alone and just get on with their life without interference but did get the chance to feed an elephant and a giraffe just like holding out a hand with leaves and fruit for it t be taken.

If they were left alone in their origin environment, you wouldn't get a chance to see them lol

I like to go to the zoo's to see the animals, but i also feel sad for the animals being stuck there

I know what you mean. Some animals spend loads of time just staying in one area where there is food so a zoo is probably fine but for animals used to hunting over a big area it might be tough. But just a thought I prefer going to local shops rather than those miles away so maybe a lion would be happy just lazing around all day in the wild if the food was just there.

I have seen some terrible zoos. Their first job should be to protect the animals. San Diego is amazing and thinks of the animals first.

Yes I totally agree:) SD. Zoo is really great. Last time I was there, they were talking how zoos are there to protect the injured and to rehabilitate animals, and to re-realise the animal when they can:) Really kinda cool :) Doing good for animals..humans are, for once :)

Im sure a lot of zoos take in animals that cant be placed back in the wild so I think it just depends.

There are good zoos, and there are bad zoos. If a zoo properly takes care of their animals, and gives them the best feeling of their natural habitat as possible, then it's a good zoo. I think safaris are better, though

I think they're mostly ok, but better if they're just for hurt animals while they recover or something like a sanctuary with lots of space.

Zoos are a great place to see and experience animals up close.

There are a lot of good criticisms for them. And the history of zoos is not great. But I think there is way to address the concerns people have about them while still allowing people the ability to see all these great animals.

The San Diego Zoo is pretty amazing. I'll admit that zoos don't appeal to me as much anymore, mainly because they're crowded and full of little kids. But I like the idea of them if they're done right. "Cheap zoos" make no sense to me. People should either be willing to spend a lot of money to make the animals as comfortable as possible or there shouldn't be one.

Do you like going to zoos? - nope. I quickly grew out of it. Maybe at age of 7.
