What does it mean when a guy thinks highly of a girl?

My friend who I've known for some time and is older than me by a few years said that he thinks highly of me. He also said that he didn't want to make it seem uncomfortable or awkward for me to hear him say that.

My initial thought is that he really appreciates and values your friendship, which is obviously awesome. If he is older than you (not really sure of ages so I’m just guessing here) then he may be more emotionally mature and may be more aware of making attachments with friends for a longer time period, when you start to reach that age where friends can become lifelong.

It means he respects and values you. I can't imagine many of my friends saying that to me, so you should feel honored getting such a mature compliment from him :)

My first thought is that your a very lucky girl that you have a friend that values you. I envy you as I wish I had a friend telling me that he thinks highly of me. I'm very jealous .
