My dad is a doctor and he’s really busy and always stressed. I know he had depression, and I think it came back. This morning he said to my Mum, “I think you should get life insurance because I don’t know how long I’ll be around.”

I’m really scared and I don’t know what to do. I can’t lose my dad!!!

Talk with your mother and express your concerns for your father. Depression kills. It is a very serious condition that many people stigmatize and don't treat as a serious illness. Your dad's comment is a cry for help that should not go unheeded. Your mother should insist that your father see a psychiatrist and perhaps a therapist too. If his depression is serious enough, hospitalization may be required. Let your father know how much you love and need him. Let him know how much he means to you and that you wouldn't want to ever be without him. There are medications and other treatments out there that have been proven effective in treating clinical depression. It takes about 30 days for psychotropic meds to take effect and can take even longer before a person begins to fully respond. There are other treatments available for severe depression such as electroconvulsive therapy and ketamine infusion. Whatever you do, don't ignore your father's condition. True clinical depression doesn't just go away. Depression needs to be taken seriously and treated. Best wishes to you and your family.

I don't think life insurance covers suicide...

I don't think life insurance covers suicide...

It depends upon the carrier. For American Servicemen and Women, SGLI covers suicide, but, I'm curious to know why you brought this issue up.

I think it is more important that her father gets the help and support he needs.

OP already said his dad is a doctor, so unless he works for the VA...he's not an enlisted serviceman. I brought it up because it was probably a comment about his overall health, and not suicide. Being over stressed can lead to alot of health problems which could possibly cause someone to succumb to an early demise.

The military employs doctors too. My dad is an Air Force pilot and his Flight Surgeon is an active duty military officer, not a VA doctor. My mom and my brothers and I are seen on base by active duty military doctors too. SGLI which is an acronym for Serviceman's Group Life Insurance actually pays out in the event of suicide. I have heard, although I can't prove it, that some policies pay in the even of suicide.
