This was talked about in another forum and this is what I read.
The mark of the beast comes from the book of Revelation in the bible.
The mark of the Beast the number 666.
Some people believe that Revelation was simply about Rome destroying Jerusalem
in 70 AD and that the Beast who's number was 666 was a reference to Nero.
So that's all there is to it, Nero destroyed Jerusalem, end of story.
Other people have been thinking for the last 2000 years that Revelation is a
prophecy about the exact time that they happen to live in. My grandfather told me his
grandfather was positive stuff written in Revelation was all about WWII and
Hitler while WWII was going on.
Since the invention of the microchip, the rumor is that everyone will be implanted
with some kind of chip that is controlled by the Beast who is some future emperor/dictator
who is actually Satan, and "no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name." Revelation 13:17

I'm atheist so I personally don't see it as more than a number. But I can it could frighten Christians. It does freak me out, however, how similar society to what is mentioned in the book of revelations (I looked it up out of curiosity). I personally it as a coincidence but I can see how Christians might get nervous.

:D You christians crack me up sometimes!
No, microchips are not being controlled by Satan.
Neither are barcodes.
And the number 666 has no special significance. Now, if the number of the beast were pi or The Fibonacci Sequence, yeah. Then we might have reason to be worried. Those numbers are all over the fucking place. :P

these urban legends about X or Y being the Mark of the Beast are propagated by opportunistic end-times shysters who know how to manipulate people and cash in on it. the "Left Behind" book series and movie are prime examples of that.
there is reliable evidence which suggests (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_beast) that the author(s) of Revelation used the number 666 as a coded reference to Emperor Nero. In the context of the rest of the story, it's obvious that it was written to be read and understood by Jewish Christians living in the first century AD, and that modern people seeing future events prophesied in it are just projecting their own guesses on something they don't really understand.

I'm a Christian but don't take the book of Revelation literally (or any other book). I think humans are doing a good enough job destroying ourselves and our planet without the need of some 666 beast. If it is a prediction, it could be symbolic. It could be human society that are the horsemen and/or the beast that destroys the planet and everything on it.

Yes, RFID tags surely are the making of the devil. Secretly atheists and satanists worldwide are conspiring, together with the New World Order, to control people with RFID and hand the corpses to the devil himself. Don't give in.
