Hi, I have been reading posts from this forum for a while now and have been hesitating to make one my self... Though today is the day!
What do i mean when I say masturbation can cause depression?
We all know that when using certain drugs with each new session it takes more of the substance to get to the same stage of "high".
Lets apply this logic to masturbation, dopamine and happy.
What am I trying to say? --- I am saying that by masturbating frequently we are keeping our dopamine levels fairly high, now dopamine does not only come from masturbating, it is responsible for every time we feel happy.
So if we keep our level of dopamine high by masturbating i have come to a conclusion that WE WOULD BE UNHAPPY WHEN NOT MASTURBATING.
Let me explain....
Our body would get used to high levels of dopamine thus the treshold for being "happy" would get upped and we would be "sadder" when not masturbating.
NOTE: THIS IS JUST MY THOUGHT AND I WONDER TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY, DOES THIS PREMISE HOLD ANY WATER??

I don’t think so, masturbation makes happy. When I am stressed for school exam or a swim competition after I masturbate it calms me down and helps me sleep.

I can be very happy, and usually am, when not masturbating. Masturbation accounts for maybe 10 - 15 minutes in a day. There are many other enjoyable things that occur in the other 23+ hours of the day.

Absolutely many men report a depressed feeling immediately after ejaculating.

mick01 has a good point here and I can say its the same for me.

Go a week without masturbating and see how you feel. I've done it and I've noticed no difference.

its not about the feeling right after it its rather about the effect it has on every other part of ur day to day routine

If the body got used to dopamine so that it became less effective with continued exposure then doing any of a number of things that make us happy would lead to becoming desensitised to it and people who were frequently happy for other reasons would end up sad as they got resistant to dopamine.
I think it is more the case that if you are not getting dopamine from other things that make you happy you are more inclined to masturbate to get it. That doesn't mean all masturbation is due to being unhappy but if you are going it a lot just for the dopamine rather than because you're horny then maybe you need to have other things in your life too that give you pleasure too.

This question isn't puberty related but more a question about mental health issues so it fits better in here.

Looking at it chemically, it certainly could. This how people become addicted to sex. Masturbation is a cheaper and quicker alternative because of its short burst of happy hormones. If your body gets used to this burst like if you do it daily, if you withdraw from it your body is going to be missing those happy hormones it’s gets on a daily basis, otherwise known as depression. But in short-term you could also experience depression right after climax as your body reverts to its normal hormonal state but after the dramataic drop you should be fine. Climax and sexuality between boys and girls are different so I don’t know how well this applies to girls

Just as I mentioned on another thread in the puberty forums, masturbation should not be the source or cause of any pain. As someone who is dealing with depression, its kinda hard when some of the things that used to bring you happiness is now a source of pain or sadness. Hence, I suggest you revaluate the things that can still bring you happiness and try to enjoy them. If something that used to bring your joy no longer satisfies you bring you sadness, it is a normal part of depression. However, you should not completely abandon these things because once you feel better and have escaped the grips of depression, you might find yourself liking these things again.
