I'm pretty sure this is a well established fact now, there's been a lot of stories going on about snapchat's privacy over the years. As PlasmaHam said, nothing on the internet is ever deleted. Although you may not be able to see that picture anymore, it's still stored away.

Internet itself is known to be one big conspiracy just made up to get your datas.
And synonym for storing and analyzing all your data's is Lovecraft's Data Cthulhu or better known to us as Google.
We feed it every day, every hour, every second. So don't worry about Snapchat, it's just one of the many manifestations of Data Cthulhu.

Of course they don't delete! Every image you load, even if it is not downloaded is still stored in your cache until you delete your temporary files! Even when you delete everything off of your system, you still have to overwrite every part of your storage with random bits in order for it to be truly deleted. Even then, it still gets stored on a server on the internet somewhere along with your account information associated with the data you sent!
I can talk for hours and hours about this stuff as well as privacy in general. It's my passion. I am quite saddened by how little my peers know about privacy, it is so important and what you say and do online right now can affect the rest of your life!

As Snapchat automatically hides unsaved chat messages, they cannot be recovered once they disappear. But why would they be saved on the phone if it can't be recovered anyways?
Anyways, I rarely use Snapchat anyways. If I could, I would rather use Instagram DM or Apple Imessages instead which I think is much better.
