That is a great passage.
I find many Bible passages to be oddly comforting at times, even though I consider myself to be an atheist.
I really wish I was religious. I have tried Catholicism, Judaism, and Buddhism to help me find some sort of inner peace but I cannot convince myself and it hurts.

A lot of people in my Church seem to share the same feeling. They mainly have meetings outside of mass to discuss Bible passages in a sort of specific setting (its not really Bible study its more of practical meetings supplemented by the Bible).
In my opinion, these types of reason are perfect valid and a very constructive way of using religion and God. If it not only helps you with your problems and makes you a better person, who are we to approve your faith? Plus, its not as if there is any danger to your interpretation of these passages since its very self developing is it not?

Yes, religion is very calming, so are other spiritual things. For me, attending church and meditating at home while doing yoga are always helpful. There are definite bible passages and stories which are favorites. I also have a counselor at church that I see weekly for help with emotional problems and it means a lot to me that she's associated with the church and the our sessions take place there.

I think the concept of the Lord as our shepherd is great the sheep know he will never lead them to danger
