The best is a water based lube like Astroglide. You can use things like baby oil, cooking oil, vasoline, hand lotion and liquid soap but they can be a bit messy.

You don't list where in the world you live, and we ALL feel awkward buying the stuff. I go to Walmart and buy either Astroglide gel (4 oz tube gives me about 40 wanks and costs about $3.75), or their store brand, "Equate" is just as good and costs maybe $1 less.
I buy 2 at a time (cuts the number of awkward purchases in half that way), and I usually will buy a stick of deodorant or something like that along with it.
Just walk up to a register and make no big deal of it.
