View Full Version : Can a girl my size wear really short shorts?

I'm having body image and self esteem issues, and need to boost my confidence that a bigger girl can look OK in more revealing clothes.
I just turned 15 last month, and have put on more weight than I probably should have, at 5'6" tall I weigh 162 pounds without clothes on and most of that is around my middle and in my legs. I have a 32" waist and 44" hips.
Mom and my big sis tell me that I have a nice curvy butt and that my thighs have a nice shape to them, but I think my butt is way too big. I would like to get a couple of pair of really short shorts, you know, the sort that barely cover your butt cheeks at the bottom. My sis has those and looks great in them, but she weighs only 120 and has a lot smaller butt than me.
What do you guys think? Am I too big to wear shorts that barely cover my butt? Should I go with something a bit longer? I have a couple pair of skin tight volleyball shorts that I plan on wearing also.

It's all about what you're comfortable wearing and comfortable showing. There will always be people heavier and lighter than you, so the best thing you can do is not be overly critical of yourself. I'm slightly shorter/weigh slightly less than you, and I also have body image issues at times. My mom likes to say I'm "pleasingly voluptuous"... don't know if that boosts my confidence or not  so yeah, if you wanna wear revealing stuff that's up to you. So long as you feel good about it :)

OMG, I love that term "pleasingly voluptuous" it sounds so much better than chubby, which I think most people immediately associate with being significantly overweight, even with being really fat. Maybe if my boobs were bigger (only 36A, just started developing there) I might like my body better. Right now I am definitely bottom heavy. :(

if you believe that you can wear short shorts, then i would go ahead! Anyone can pull off any clothing item if they show a little bit of confidence in what they’re wearing. :) it’s similar to the whole “summer body” thing - yes, i may not be stick thin, but i DO have a body in the summer months... therefore I have a summer body! :D
I had similar proportions to you when i was 15, I’m about the same now, probably 34 waist and 43 hips? But what I have now is something that I didn’t have 2 years ago: significantly better body confidence. I have a bit of flab on the tummy and my legs, but I love my curves and wouldn’t trade them for anything! I am sure you will grow out a bit and become a bit more proportional too and bottom - i think that definitely helps when it comes to body confidence for me.

I mean sure, I guess you can wear whatever you want.... but if you end up out in public with your ass hanging out...that's kind of tacky.

And that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I want to show off as much as possible, but not have my butt cheeks showing when I'm standing or walking normally. Being kinda chubby there's not much I can do about what might show if I bend over, without wearing shorts that are quite a bit longer, which I am trying to get away from. So I don't plan on bending over. ;)

Wear whatever you like and that makes you happy.

If you feel too bare you could add shorts like i saw on a concert with Rihanna. Short shorts and net style shorts underneath.

Katie, I say go for it! You should be able to wear whatever you want. If anyone has a problem with that, it’s their problem, not yours

You should wear whatever you feel comfortable with. Don't worry about what others think. Life would be boring if everyone looked the same. Variety is exciting.

Thanks everyone, I actually did it! I got a pair that just cover the bottom of my butt and mom and my sis say I look good in them, so yesterday evening I went to a casual graduation party at a friend's house (her sis was graduating) and got lots of looks and even a few nice compliments. When we do the graduation party for my big sis shortly, I think I want to wear them again.

My older sister told me, "To wear small shorts you have got to have a great Underbutt" I now know what she means

My mom and big sis say your upper thighs have to be defined where they meet your butt, as opposed to a smooth transition.

Hi Katie,
It sounds like it was a good experience. What all did you wear in addition to the shorts? Were you careful not to bend over? :)

I had on two tank tops layered, a lavender one underneath and a white one on top. I had sandals on but since the party was in the back yard and mostly in the grass, I took them off pretty quickly because I'm used to being barefoot most of the time. I also wore two lavender scrunchies, one on my pony tail and the other one on my wrist. Several people told me I looked nice in those shorts, including some boys who were part of the senior class. I stopped and talked to a few of them for quite a while, which made me feel good they would even bother to do that with someone 3 years younger and 3 grades behind them in school.
It totally made my day although I'd rather hear that sort of compliments from other girls. I noticed quite a few boys turning their heads to look, so it must be good. I didn't bend over more than a few times, finding it easier to squat down if I needed to pick up something off the ground. Standing up and looking in the mirror, the shorts covered the bottom edge of my panties by about half an inch or so, so nothing showed.

I've been wearing them more and more, but not to school of course. I def notice that I get more attention than I do with other clothes, lots of looks, lots of smiles, guys telling me I am cute or pretty, one even said I looked really sexy, which I never got before. So they are a winner for me!

You can wear whatever you want to wear, no matter your body shape or size. Just find a short shorts you that tailors you and you feel comfortable and beautiful in. It looks like i'm a little late to this thread as your post above describes success which is very good. Seems like your next step is wearing them to school, the most important thing to remember is confidence! I had some body self esteem issues back in middle school, I can relate.

School is finished for the semester, but I wouldn't dare wear them to school. We have a dress code, and I would def be the one that got taken down to the principal's office over showing too much skin. Dresses and skirts have to be as long as your fingertips with arms relaxed at your sides, and shorts have to have a specific minimum inseam, and these are nowhere near meeting that requirement. :( But it would be totally fun to be able to wear them to school if I could.
What some other girls do, is bring dif clothes with them in their backpack and change after school is over, before they go home so they can show off on the bus or while walking. I don't remember anyone getting nailed for having too much skin showing on the bus as long as they kept clothes on. A few girls have worn pretty skimpy halter tops or crop tops on the way home from school, and really short shorts or skirts.

My sis used to wear short shorts all the time.....she used to be really skinny as a teen.......she's gone to college and came back and has gained quite a bit of weight..She still wears them and actually, I think those look better on her now that her butt has raeally rounded out..

It's no secret that I like other girls, and I notice how their butts look in those shorts. I totally agree with you that a girl with a few extra pounds looks better in snug fitting little shorts than a really thin girl does, at least to me. When I first posted about this a few weeks ago I was totally lacking confidence in my own ability to wear them and actually look good. I'm finally realizing that having those extra pounds myself (I'm up to about 170 now) may not be such a bad thing. :D

You can wear everything, especially in summer, it must be really uncomfortable to wear jeans or trousers when it’s hot

Yes, I used to wear blue jean shorts, the sort that are almost knee length with sewn cuffs and even those are too hot in the summer. Regular jeans are impossible when it's about 80 degrees or more.
I've come to love my new really short shorts and wear them a lot when I go places with my friends. I also have a couple pair with like a 2" and 4" inseam, which are still way shorter than the ones I used to have. I'm also wearing really short skirts for the first time this summer.
