Masturbation is is really common and most probably do it regularly since it feels good but how long between each time can vary. For some, it's a few days, for others a few hours and for some could be weeks. Some people just don't have the same sex drive as others so don't need to do it as often or maybe purposefully doon't masturbate for long periods so that it feels even better when they do masturbate.

Well, I guess it's up to the person.
But sex is just so much different (sensations, feelings, experiences...) that it does help to jerk off in anticipation of it. I guarantee you you'll last longer. Besides, you'll likely also have less wet dreams.
I'll be honest, I probably jerk off more than most, but I have never had a wet dream and they are so inconvenient. So you definitely want to avoid that. And for your partner's sake (and your own...) lasting longer is always better.
