Why American guys are cut? (The majority)

I think the majority of American guys are cut. It's more of the culture here. Doctors and medical people believed that, if circumcised, you'd be cleaner and less likely to transmit sexual diseases. I think some even thought that it would discourage masturbation. But studies keep coming out that disprove all of the old thinking. But it's so ingrained now, it's hard to change the mindset.

It was a trend to have your sons cut for old-fashioned, pseudoscientific reasons a long time ago and so having your child cut is just sort of a tradition now. There is also the influence of Judaism and Islam on certain people who come from families of those faiths. However, since having a foreskin is the biological standard, I'd assume most guys are uncut.

Unfortunately old religious practices still greatly influence American people even if they reject religion. I think circumcision is the best example of that. Some people can't let go of tradition even if it means hurting their children.

There is a decline in the majority
of baby boys being cut in the US
over the last few years according
to my Mom who is a pediatrician
but says that the percentage is
still high for religious and health
reasons.

I think that maybe only about 2/3 of guys are cut hear. As ska8er said it is declining now and I have heard that there is some legislators that are pushing to ban all circumcisions except for medical reasons. I hope that they do this. There was a push after WWII because of a lot of military guys got VD while serving overseas during the war. So doctors thought that circumcision would cut down on the amount transmitted because they thought that intact men were more susceptible to contracting VD. That is my understanding anyway. There are over 170 deaths and many injuries and complications every year from circumcisions in the USA.

Wow I had no idea there were 170 deaths!

Ya I definitely think the major reason was first religion, then tradition, then thinking it would cut down on STDs. And at this point why would parents stop? Makes sense that dads would want their boys to be like Dad. I have only seen a handful of uncut dicks. But on the other hand think about the money we would save if we stopped doing the unnecessary surgery. Not to mention the deaths that I now know about.

First, people were just misophobic and thought that having an uncircumcised penis is dirty and gross.

Secondly, people thought it was a "cure" for masturbation. Until people found out that even cut guys masturbate and it was a normal thing to do.

Thirdly, people thought it would prevent STDs. But in reality, it doesn't. Just wear a condom.

Lastly, this tradition continued, however it is declining today now.

Yes there is some truth in what Jamie has
said here. Starting in the 1950s the baby
boomers-those male babies born after WWII
were automatically cut usually without parents
consent cause it was a natural thing to do at
that time. Now parents r asked if they want it
done mainly because of any civil actions. I am
cut and I am satisfied being this way and I'm
glad my parents had it done to me.

when we went on a family holiday to south africa last christmas thye said that they were trying to get loads of men in africa circumsized because it stopped the spread of hiv so i guess there may be some medical reasons for it.

Technically, being circumcised does reduce the risk of HIV but in the USA I don't think that this is really the reason they do it. I think it's quite a traditional country, and it is likely that families will like to do what happened to them, so if your dad is circumcised, they will likely get the son circumcised too, just because its normal.

Would also like to know why are so many men circumcised in the USA?
I have lived in Germany for 2 years.
I've been drilling and growing up in the US.
For me was getting circumcised normal looked just circumcised.
All my mates were circumcised, father brothers and relatives too.
Now in Germany, all mates are uncircumcised. Don't understand why? Finde looks really different with foreskin looking really different fully weird.
Why is it not done in the USA in Germany?

It’s the norm because they think it’s a big health benefit and when it became normal nobody knew that babies were in severe pain. It’s also too taboo to talk about, so there is little change happening.
There are also many Jews in the us.many.. many jews..

The guy who founded Kellogg's was one of the first people who started this. He created cornflakes to reduce sex drive, as well as graham crackers.

Yes. Interesting. Dr. J. H. Kellogg was the person who produced corn flakes mainly for better nutrition. But, also he believe that corn flakes would reduce sexual arousal in males and prevent masturbation. He didn't leave out girls, BTW. He also had a remedy to prevent girls from masturbating. He recommended applying carbolic acid directly on a girl's clitoris. Carbolic acid is a corrosive chemical and very painful when applied to skin.

It just became a trend.

It is said that it is cleaner and smells less, and also prevents UTIs. It's kinda true, though I don't think that circumcision is necessary.

As some people said on this thread and some other similar threads, it was also believed circumcision would prevent masturbation.

Religion and inertia. It’s been the cultural norm forever and people don’t like to change.
