It's not really as much a decision, just thinking and saying which you belong to, it's more just deciding how it is you feel about the religions and what you personally believe in, you might believe in what 1 religion believes in but have problems with some of their ideas too or believe in 1 and believe in other ideas for other religions, or fully into 1 religion, or not into any set 1, it's all just what you believe personally.

Everyone is born without faith.
Everything else is simply instilled and part of one's own individual experiences through the long journey of socialization becoming an adult.

My parents are Catholic and so am I. Personally, I take a bigger interest in religion and philosophy than they do. I have taken two eastern religions (that can also be philosophies and follow them in a non-religious way. For example, a person of any religion can follow the eightfold path of Buddhism.

It is very true that everyone is born without faith. Which is why I think it's silly to say "you're going to hell if you don't follow my religion!" Most of the time we don't choose or faith.
That being said, a person can find religion at any point in their life. Many people that are raised in non-religious families find religion after exposure to the world.

Most people follow the religion that they were raised in because it's all they really know, whether they really believe it or not, as well as fears of being rejected if they choose to leave that religion. If someone wanted to join a faith, I'd say just find one that has beliefs that most line up with your own and that you genuinely can believe in.

As children, we are usually expected to follow in our parent's beliefs and attend church with them. When we are older, we are free to follow our own hearts in the matter and determine for ourselves what to do. I do think that if someone in their teens decides to change religions, they have to be sensitive to their parents beliefs and not do it in a hurtful way, simply explain that this seems right for me at this time in my life.
