I wouldn't say guilty - I have always known it is not wrong, but you do suddenly stop being horny and, at the start, I would think "why did I just do that?" as if the horniness was something weird that had temporarily taken over my brain just like how you imagine an acid trip would be.

Its common for a lot of guys to have a moment of guilt, cuz you're all caught up in the moment. When I first started masturbating I had LOADS of guilty feelings. One of my biggest ones was that I didn't know everybody did this, and did it a lot. In that case I think it would be a good idea to have talk with him. Make sure he understands that getting horny is a normal part of puberty and that masturbating is a completely instinctual and therefore completely natural and normal way to deal with being horny and is something almost everyone does. Obviously he will already know it feels great but I also find I am in a better mood if I get off regularly and am better able to concentrate on other things.

Then it would be good to talk about why he feels like it is something wrong. There are two obvious candidates for me:

1. Religion, especially the story of Onan that has, to my mind been over generalised to give rise to Roman Catholic and Purtitanical views. It seems to me the thrust of the bible's teachings on sex is very much anti-adultery but not so much anti anything else.

2. General attitudes. Strangely, while we use sexual atrraction to sell just about everything, we treat sexual activity like some big secret and, especially, adults don't talk about it in front of even older children which re-inforces the impression of secrecy. This is where it worth him understanding the difference between privacy and secrecy. We all need to shit, and there is nothing wrong with doing so, but we generally do so behind a closed door because we don't want somone to watch and we generally think other people would prefer not to see it. This is an example of privacy. If you wait until you mum is in the shower to raid her purse that's secrecy because it isn't just that you don't want to be seen but because you know you shouldn't be doing it and if you are seen you'll get into trouble. So sexual activity generally, and that includes masturbation, is private rather than secret. Just because you don't want to be seen doing it doesn't mean it is wrong.

Even having the discussion will probably help but failure to talk about is all part of what makes a taboo.

Yeah, that's a really common feeling, especially when you're first coming to terms with masturbation. But there is a difference between "Why did I just do that?" and "I should not have done that!". I think that's pretty common. A lot of people blame cultural attitudes, but I've heard it has to do more with the way men evolved.
