Anyone like Star Wars?

Dalcourt

I like some of it. I like the old Star Wars movies and I like the Clone Wars TV show.
Rouge One was okay, too, but I didn't like The Force Awakens at all. It was so boring and The last Jedi was even worse.

So yeah, I like parts of it but I'm not a fanatic that just gets crazy about all Star Wars related things.

I'm not crazy about the new ones but they aren't absolute abominations like everyone says

I like the original star wars trilogy and revenge of the sith, the others kinda take away from it all and confuse me.

The originals were the best. Parts of the prequels were decent. I hated Force Awakens and I didn't bother to see the newest one, though at some point, I probably will

Star Wars is like my life. I don’t really have much to live for, so yeah. I love all the voices, but my favourite is Revenge of the Sith.

I really like them. I like the force awakens too and I don't get all the negativity about it.

Same, I like the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi, but I fell asleep in Rogue One. I kind of didn't understand it, but I'm not saying it's bad.

I love the original three movies, not so keen on the new ones. I think it's odd and find it hard to head around the fact that they are set before the first three films but the sets costums and special effects (CGI) are better.

Good overall. I'm not a huge fan of it, I'm moreso into harder sci-fi like Star Trek, but I've watched and enjoyed most of it. Still gotta see Episode 8.

define harder.
I knew someone would call me out on that :P

I guess the better way to put it is that I'm not a big fan of the science-fantasy genre that encompasses Star Wars. Star Wars, in simplest terms, is really just a fairy tale in a science-fiction setting. Especially in the original trilogy, where it was very indicative of classic Greek tales of the hero's journey. The science-fiction is really just window-dressing to that tale. That interpretation may be arguable to some, but that's how I see it.

So, on to the nerd discussion we've all been waiting for! I assume you know of, or at least heard of the Mohs Scale of Sci-Fi Hardness (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness). It's a scale from 1 to 6 to measure how sci-fi works line up with actual science. Star Wars is a solid 1. A sci-fi setting, but the work itself provides very little actual science. Star Trek varies between series, but most would say it is about a 2.5 - 3. It has an in-universe set of laws that are fairly consistent, and it generally tries to adhere to real scientific principles and theories. More scientifically accurate works, like The Martian or Gattaca, are further up there.

My personal preference is the 3 range. I'm not generally a fan of sci-fi that attempts to over-explains it's technology to the point it sound more like an educational work than an entertainment work, but I do like some solid basis for it.

I fully agree. Star Wars is pure fantasy.

However, I got my own categories and once put Star Trek under Fantasy, because here, despite the much higher emphasis on technology, very often supernatural entities and such also play a major role.

Fantasy actually starts imo when telepathy, teleportation and such phenomena are use in stories.

That's why eg Stanley Kubrick's 2001 is a fantasy construct for me, because it's about supernatural beings, at least at the end of the movie.

Series like HUM∀NS or films / books like 1984 are rather more SciFi to me, whereas I lately tend to associate them with social fiction, because basically it's not really about real scientific fiction.

Yesterday, I argued with some dorm-mates about whether superhero stories are SciFi or Fantasy. For me they are clearly just Fantasy.

To be honest, I really don' think of any real sci-fi books or movies, because science and technology are always just an afterthought to tell a story that's takes place in the near or a rather distant future.

I'm starting to use FF (Future Fiction) instead of SF (Science Fiction). Seems to me more correct, even if that will never prevail.

But under this generic term we could also include Star Wars.

when discussing star wars not only the films should be included in cannon, on one hand some one like boba fett for instance is a minor character in the films ,but when accounting for all of the spin off material he becomes a much more substantial character.

Yeah for sure. But I guess only real star wars geeks know all of the spin off/extended universe stuff.
And it's even heavily discussed among fans what is canon and what not since the whole thing got changed around so much by George Lucas and then Disney.

yeah, true(disney just couldn't resist making more money, "oh all this crap? we'll just rewrite it all and sell it to them as 'new material' "

Disney's top priority is always just making money, which is kinda sad sometimes.

Anyway, I watched the latest trailer for the upcoming Han Solo movie. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I guess I'll watch it but I'm still a bit meh about it...wasn't all that exciting up to now.

How do others think about it?

I'm a fan of star wars. For the first time, I saw star wars with my uncle. He was 14 when the first part came out. It was mega cool. I really liked the last part, which was released in 2017. I even tried to find similar films for star wars https://bestsimilar.com/movies/38934-star-wars-episode-viii , but nothing compares to them. In 2018, one more episode will be released, Han Solo. I really want this.

I liked that one a lot too! Maybe cuz it was kinda dark at the end. Although the Grand Moff Tarkin reminded me of Tom Hanks in the Polar Express.

I like the Star Wars movies generally, just not a huge fangirl.

I forgot to add, that thanks to my uncle, who refuses to let his VCR player and VHS collection go, I have seen the original theater versions of the old movies, as they were before George Lucas started messing them up. :D

I have been a die-hard Star Wars fan for as long as I remember, but I hated rebels because it was too kid friendly. What bugged me is that you never even could see the Jedi use there lightsabers to kill any stormtroopers because it would be “too graphic”. The new Star Wars movies are also not the best but I enjoyed rogue one and Solo.
