Has anyone asked their parents why?

I haven't but I don't need to. It's just about automatic here to get circumcised and I know every male in our family, including uncles and cousins, are all cut.

My parents r doctors? I haven't
asked but I learned from them
that 90% of boys here r cut
cause parents asked for it
and it is what doctors do
normally to babies.

I did ask. It was when I was in 7th grade and it was when I first discovered there appeared to be two different kinds of penises. My parents told me that when I was born, just about all boy babies were being circumcised and they didn't want me to grow up looking different. (But now in my school about half the kids were born in other countries, and many of those boys I've noticed are not circumcised.)

How do you ask a question like that?

Circumcision is a tradition here in the Philippines. It is a passage of rite, saying that you are now moving on from being a child to an adolescent. Also for hygienic purposes.

Somewhere around the ages of 10-14 I guess, also depends on you. Sometimes other boys get circumcised after birth because of some complications that idk about.

Why do they wait until you are 10-14 years old? Is it done for religious and cultural reasons?

Circumcision is pretty much the default option in the U.S. Apparently it was first heavily used in the U.S because it was seen as a way to deter masturbation.

I wasn't circumcised at birth, but I was about a yr ago for health reasons. When all that was happening my parents told me that I wasn't at birth because our family doctor said that she didn't believe it was necessary. Clearly she was wrong.

I'm not circumcised but everyone where I live is. I didn't know why my penis looked different until I was in 5th grade. I was too embarrassed to ask my parents. I still don't know why I wasn't circumcised but I'm glad that I'm not.

My god. Circumcision doesn't have ANYTHING to male hygiene, or anything similar. Anybody who says just so is a COMPLETE, utter MORON. An imbecile too.

That's what it's like to possess uneducated parents, my friend. I'm so sorry.

There are benefits to circumcision. You can debate whether they're worth it, but just calling everyone who disagrees with you "moron", "imbecile", and "uneducated" reflects more on you than on them.

Is there a significant Muslim population there? I have always though of that as a Muslim tradition.

There is undoubtedly a small proportion of boys who do have problems with their foreskin, e,g, phimosis, but that still doesn't make out a case for circumcising at birth "just in case". After all, a small number of people experience appendicitis and need to have their appendix surgically removed in an emergency operation but that doesn't mean we whip out everyone's appendix just in case. For the record, the UK NHS does not see phimosis as something that necessarily needs to be treated unless it leads to other problems. See https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/phimosis/
Interestingly, NewLeafsFan, reading that article I can see why you said you saw your foreskin, prior to being circumcised, as something that got in the way during sex and I don't see it that way I don't have phimosis. So please don't take my comments here as a criticism of your decision to be circumcised. You know your own situation better than I ever could and it's your right to make that decision for yourself. But equally, your doctor could not be expected to have a crystal ball.

I don't think I need to explain why after going through the procedure and doing countless hrs of research because of how much I wanted to make sure I made the right choice it is very insulting to be quoted with a link to info. I'll tell you what, you get circumcised and then we can have this debate again, ok?
I have already shared in a different thread that you have quoted about the stats about why I feel it being something rare is a misconception. If you need a source to back me up, look on the American Society of Pediatrics website.

No, most Filipinos are still Catholics, and people who are descended from races that has Islam for their religion practices it here, there are quite a lot, but not where I live. As long as they are raised and exposed in the culture of the Filipinos, they are going to get circumcised, it is the cultural norm here and it transcends all religions.

Yes and its for hygiene reasons and culture. If you are not circumcised here and someone catches you naked there is slur dedicated for you (literally the world plastic bag). I realise this may not that be relevant now but my older siblings said in the late 80’s and 90’s it was a huge deal for them. My parents are not in with the times when i was born so...

Used to be catholic but family converted when I was a kid. I think they explained it like that when I was young age 6ish but later on it was mentioned to be just part of culture/religion.

You're exactly right. It was once believed that masturbating lead to blindness (or various other things.) As a way to prevent, circumcision was brought into mass popularity.
Well, when that was shown to be a lie, the doctors needed more "reasons" to circumcise to keep the money coming in.
I wasn't circumcised at birth, but I was about a yr ago for health reasons. When all that was happening my parents told me that I wasn't at birth because our family doctor said that she didn't believe it was necessary. Clearly she was wrong.
She was actually right. If circumcision was necessary, the worldwide rate would be 100%. In reality, it's well below 50%.
Most foreskin "problems" are thought up by circ-happy doctors. Creams and other methods exist. In reality, however, the foreskin may not even begin to retract until after puberty starts.

Jesus was circumcised as part of Jewish tradition. The only thing that matters for Christians is baptism. Anyone who links Christianity and circumcision is wrong.

Not exactly. Catholics don't, some orthodox Christians (for example members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church) do it.

I'm actually OK with being circumcised. I just don't know why doctors have to make it so tight...
Why can't they do a partial circumcision or just make it a little bit loose?
ShineintheDark

If you were cut when you were a baby, your parents would have probably chosen a tight cut since there are looser cuts that the doctors offer.
