Sex toy companies make toys in all kinds of sizes (and shapes, not just penis shapes), not just huge ones, and that shows that size is not even close to being the defining factor, even in sex toys where buyers can see how big it is before they make the purchase.
Projecting this onto male/female relations: males don't walk around with their penises out, so females do not see how big it is before they hook up with one ("make the purchase").

Don't get me wrong, I agree that it isn't nearly the most important thing in a relationship and a rumour probably won't be taken seriously. In the case of friends with benefits it would obviously be a plus.
