Here's an idea that I've been working on. It's about a private detective. Business is very poor. He's broke. He that tight on cash that he rents out a small office behind a restaurant to work out of. After working there awhile he befriends the chef who works at the restaurant. There is a second floor to the building with crappy apartments on it. The PI rents one of them as well. The PIs dad is a detective forced into retirement. He had been shot on the job and he had developed PTSD to the point where he was afraid to leave the house. His mental state was that bad that he was forced to move in with his son the PI. But they had had a very troublesome relationship in the past. The PI was kind of the black sheep of the family, so there's a lot of tension between them. But then the PI gets this missing person case, a 16 year old high school girl. The police won't look into it because they think its just a run away. They figure she'll turn up. But as the PI looks into it, he realises that something serious may have happened to her. He goes to his dad for help. The case becomes a bonding experience for the two of them and it helps the father cope somewhat with his PTSD. As they dig up evidence, they realise that the girl was most likely murdered. They start getting threatening messages from the killer telling them to leave it alone. The twist of the story is that the killer turns out to be the PIs chef friend. He had been in an secret and inappropriate relationship with the high school girl, and when she had decided to leave him, he killed her.
