how do I explain?

My best friend wants to understand why I cut and what it's like... and he said he would do it if it meant that he could understand better and help me if I need it. I just don't want him to actually go to that extreme to try and understand. And I don't know how to explain it well enough for him to get it.
I feel bad, because if he DOES try it... I'm going to feel so guilty and... I don't want to think about it.
I need help...
Any ideas of how to get him to understand?

Tell him it does not work that way. That what you do is a very personal thing and him trying to copy it, is not going to put him in your shoes. We cut to feel something and get satisfaction, the same as anyone does destructive stuff like smoking, hard drinking, drugs etc. It is your personal coping mechanism for your personal pain. There is no way for him to experience that.

Just because you don't understand, doesn't mean others won't, they could understand better and get a general idea of how I feel...
