I ma not sure I'd agree about it happening a lot but it can happen. Essentially you ejaculated without the usual accompanying orgasm. This can happen because orgasm and ejaculation are actually separate things that just usually occur together. It also seems more likely for this to happen if you have been edging, i.e. trying to get close to cumming without actually going over the edge - if you don't quite get it right this can be the result.

Don't be put off, though. As Freshavacado said, next time should be fine and edging is way to good away to get the best and most intense orgasms to give up practising it.
