Wet dreams happen because your body has an excess amount of semen because you don’t masturbate. So the difference here is about when you start to masturbate relative to the rest of your development.

If, like me, the testosterone surge at the start of puberty caused you to discover how to masturbate then naturally your first orgasms would be dry. It is the same surge in testosterone that causes the glands that make the liquid in semen to develop and begin production but that takes a little time. It also follows that when you first start to ejaculate those glands have not really got up to speed so you tend to start with a little and clear semen and then it gradually gets more and turns whiter as time goes by.

If, on the other hand you don't discover masturbation until much later then those glands develop anyway and you start producing semen but not ejaculating it until eventually you have the wet dream.

Having an orgasm from masturbation with ejaculation as your first experience is somewhere in between, i.e. you discovered masturbation after your body had already started making semen but before it had got to the point of having a wet dream.
