It's part of a series of safety screening questions, like do you wear a seatbelt, do you smoke, etc. I don't know what they'd say if you said there were guns in the house; I imagine they'd ask if they were sercured.

I do remember reading awhile back that some parents objected to that question being asked. I don't imagine all or even most American doctors ask that, but I don't know.
