in my media class this question came up because we are studying persuasion techniques, convincing people to believe something is true, when it is really false or vice-versa, or whatever! :P

Earth being flat makes no sense tbh. If it were true, I could see the Andes and Mount Everest from the top of my apartment building.

The horizon exists purely because of the Earth's spherical shape. That's evidence enough, really. Otherwise, the fact that we've actually been to space and saw the Earth's shape (Crew on the ISS see it daily) is basically a "There is nothing you can do to prove that Earth is flat" sort of thing going on.

It's a proven tact that if you spend enough time and money you with the power of the media you can convince people (sheepeople) just about anything.... doesn't matter if its true or not.
Oh btw the world is round.

yeah, that true. we talked about that in class at school. what is kinda also true, is people don't need to be rich anymore because of the internet. now a single crazy person can do all kinds of crazy things on the internet that before only crazy rich people or companies could do.

in class we can talk about things we have seen on the internet, but we can't talk about how to do things like that. some guys at school have done some pretty crazy things because they know how, but they can't say how they did it, at least not in class.

I really disagree with a class that is teaching others how to deceive others.

But the answer of how people persuade other people, is a dangerously powerful art.

It all comes down to a mix of psychology, biology, and epistemology (the philosophical study of how we attain knowledge).

My view on it, is that people have poor communication skills, everything is a game of telephone and the way language is spoken and written is not transparent enough to convey a true message. This is why people can misunderstand each other and chaos can begin from that point of misunderstanding.

Reading body language is another, and comparing that with what is verbally uttered...can be contradictory right? Some will sense this others won't.

But a fact of life is that most people hate thinking, they go for easy answers and for the few that know this, they'll hide the true message in a mental space that requires more effort to get too.

Conspiracy theorists sound smart, and they might be, but in actuality they abandon a system of rigorous thinking, to believe the unbelievable without a logical explanation and often lack the means to explain their justification for why they did use different mental criteria in say their professional job, but when it comes to believing a conspiracy theory they aren't as rigorous in vetting the facts.

People who fashion conspiracy theories or marketing know the point in which to hook an audience in within the context of telling a fancy story and balance the smart-sounding-talk, while also hiding the facts from view.

Do people want to be lied too and kept emotionally happy and feel good? Or do they want to be told the truth even if it means sending them down an emotionally sad and hard path.

Most people take the former option, and that's how humanity has en mass used persuasion in a predatory way.

on one hand i can see how you could look at the class and say it's teaching people to deceive others, but I would also hope that the class is teaching the students to think outside the box. even if we KNOW something, try to understand WHY the other person may be thinking that way.

then the students learn to have an open mind and also to THINK not just follow

An epistemology class does a better job of analyzing the methods of how the human brain and society accumulates knowledge and then claims to know what they know.

It asks the main question, what does it mean to know something? That's worth more exploration and makes one do out of the box thinking more so than what a marketing class does.

No offense, but my original point still stands.

Because for every statement there is always gonna be at least one person who questions it, even if it has been proven to be true countless times (as is their right of course, as an equal contributor to the discussion).

In short, there's no fixing stupid ;P

i find it funny and interesting that so many people really think its flat. they are obviously wrong, but i don't think they are stupid, at least not stupid like they are unable to understand, its more like they don't want to beleive it round for some reason, and they have made themselves think its flat. just very very weird.

that's a good question. on youtube, there are some very serious answers to that question, and those answers seem reasonable, but my science teacher explained that the videos often ignore specific facts that make their theory fall apart, or they explain it away by suggesting that the unexplainable is part of conspiracy to hide the truth.

Yup. Theories like these, if earth is round or flat won't be settled any time soon, one can keep discussing this with someone, and never concluding anything because of the endless denial and ignoring. :P

It's definitely not flat. If the Earth was flat planes and ships would fly/sail off the edge of the world. If you look at images from space you can clearly see the earth is spherical. Also facetime/skype someone in Australia from UK/USA at 1am. In Australia it'll be daylight. That's not possible if the earth is flat.
