I can't speak for all guys, but normally I would imagine it is used for clean up purposes, although I do know some guys that have used a sock like a condom and masturbated with it over their penis, but I don't believe this is the most common use of a sock.

When I use the sock technique I use it for the whole wank. Makes for an easy clean up. Only problem is if I use one sock for my morning wank, that afternoon after school I have to use the other sock for a wank so I don't have odd socks in the laundry.

I don't use a sock myself but when hearing that others did I always assumed the point was to put your dick inside it, like a very loose condom, and then you'd be able to fun without worrying about aim and minimal wiping of your dick at the end. If you just use a sock to wipe up with then what advantage does a sock have compared to any other type of clothing?

I do use a sock when I jerk off. It's more like for convenience and makes the clean up a lot easier than cleaning up with a tissue or towel after I ejaculate.
