Hi guys, I'd just like to say that I may be the one of the most lucky students alive! This semester, I have this Health teacher, named Coach Sims. His teaching style is one that every teacher should adopt!
I- On the first day, he wrote on the board: 'I respect you. You respect me.' He called attention to the fact that there was no 'and' in the phrase. He said he would respect us regardless of what we do to him.
II- He completely threw the textbook out of the window. He said "Glencoe (The textbook company) doesn't control us. If there is an optimal teaching opportunity I will throw this book away. Because the next day, what's gonna be here? (The Book) What may not? (Us)."
III- He goes into these long lectures about his own life stories throughout school and college. Very personal ones, such as when his ex cheated on him in the 90s, and what he did about it, to teach us about some type of knowledge.
IV- He gives no homework!
V- He enjoys fraternizing with the students, cracking jokes, and laughing at those produced by the students.
VI- We don't have a policy about hand raising
VII- We watch movies frequently, (Contagion, Castaway, Remember the Titans) to teach us morals, values, and vocabulary words.
VIII- We had to write letters to him as an assignment about our personal life. He told us not to hold back anything. He read each one, and shredded them after. He has an amazing ability of memory, and he can recall most details of all 128 students he sees each day.
IX- He is free to talk to anytime, and he says that anytime you need to talk, he is available, and doesn't care if he has a class to teach, the individual is more important. He's told stories about this in the past.
X- He says he won't waste his time on someone he doesn't care about.
What is your opinion on Coach?
