Can you do spoilers on here? I think it would be useful because I have a bunch of pictures to post on a thread.

I think spoilers would be a great idea, if they're possible. Good for lengthy quotes/lengthy blocks of text, lots of pictures, actual spoilers (lel) etc.

Could definitely save us a lot of scrolling. Lmao

The reason it's been turned down in the past is because the argument has been made that people can leave inappropriate things in spoiler tags, quickly edit them before a mod notices, and nothing would happen to them. Personally I don't think this would really be an issue, and I wouldn't mind their addition myself honestly.

But if you can see all edits that are made, is that not an irrelevant argument?

I feel really dumb right now.
I'm guessing that in this case, "spoiler" is not giving away the ending to a movie?

We have spoiler balloons on another teen forum and as far as I know it's never been abused.

Nothing dumb about it, just something you never saw before. It's text or a picture that gets hidden in a narrow balloon that has to be clicked to see it. The command usually goes: image and or text

To be honest I never understood that part of the argument for that reason, but I'm guessing there were other things blocking it as well, but I don't remember currently :P

To be honest I never understood that part of the argument for that reason, but I'm guessing there were other things blocking it as well, but I don't remember currently :P

Here is why:

The potential(no, scratch that -- inevitable) abuse is one big reasons we might not want this. I, and all those who help us by reporting things, haven't got the time to click "reveal" or "show" every time.
And editing posts with too many spoilers is also more work than it's worth.

I'd only support it if there was an option to keep them "always open".

Spoilers can't really work on VT. That would take a lot more time when moderating to go through spoiler posted and buried in P101 and a lot more would slip through the cracks. I also really don't like spoilers... :\

Okay, this had been brought up back when I was on staff and while this works on some forums, with the nature of topics brought up on VT, having anything potentially hidden is not a good idea. It makes it a lot harder for mods to catch sensitive or inappropriate things in a timely manner. Issues may not be reported if people don't bother to unhide potentially inappropriate parts of posts and it means mods have to go around making sure every bit of hidden content is not hidden because people are trying to work around the rules.

What I mean is if people post graphic material in the self-harm section, anything in P101 that is against the rules, etc, because they think if it's hidden, it's okay because not everyone will see it when it's actually not okay at all, you're going to see problems and considering the staff are teens volunteering their time, it's not really fair. To be frank, on a site like this where a lot of topics need to be monitored pretty carefully in order to maintain the security of the members seeking help here, all it would probably do is make doing so more of a hassle than it needs to be. It's much easier to briefly skim a thread to make sure it's alright than have to pick through ones where people decide "oh... hm, maybe this is embarrassing or triggering and I should hide it" and it turns into a 50/50 split of whether or not it's harmless or indeed breaks rules and you can't just turn a blind eye to save the time and effort unfortunately.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be neat in the TV sections or whatnot but from a practical point of view as someone who moderated the help sections, there are some obvious problems with this idea here. It's a feature that would probably end up being abused and because of the type of site this is, I don't think it's necessary or a good idea. I get that not everything about VT is centered around helping people but a majority is because it is a help site and you should keep that in mind when suggesting features that may be great in the non-help sections but potentially troublesome in the part of the site meant to help people. This was my contribution when I was on staff and I thought I'd mention it again.

I can totally understand their arguments, but as I suggested there, maybe it would be possible to put them in certain forums (GD etc) and not others (certain H&A)

I will add that on the site I'm on that has them, it's a fad that has pretty much died out. I haven't posted with one in ages.

Well that doesn't really say anything about how people will use it on here :P

Of course I do see the argument as to why it wouldn't be used in Help and Advice, but what I don't understand is why it would making modding that much more difficult. If a mod's reading a thread, I don't see why it'd be so difficult just to double check a spoiler tag to make sure that there's nothing inappropriate in it.

I don't think it makes it more difficult per say. I think thought it would make it more difficult with regards to slippages and potentially missing this. If I'm reading posts within puberty 101 for example I could miss a spoiler tag in a post but I'm unlikely to miss a link or an email address. I don't think it would make modding more difficult in the sense it would add more of a challenge I think it would make it more difficult when it comes to spotting things right away and possibly letting stuff fall through the cracks.

From my experience on staff, I sometimes missed things and I think adding something like that in would only increase the possibility of missing things.

What I meant is that it's really nothing for anyone to be longing for.
It's cool and fun, but it's not all that terribly fantastic IMO YMMV.
Maybe it could be one of those things available after X amount of posts.

Post count doesn't guarantee a good members and if you made it available for those with like 2,500 posts then not many people would use it and it would become rather pointless to have such a feature.

I agree with Steven, but I also read a neat suggestion that it be restricted to certain forums. I can see it being handy in forums like TV & Cinema, Sports, etc., but potentially abused in Puberty101. I'm not sure that restricting it to a certain post count would be all that effective, either.

Wonder.

I still fully support spoiler tags. A common complaint was that they probably wouldn't be used very often, but then again, when's the last time someone used the highlight or or code or indent tags? They're useful to have if needed, even if it's rarely used.

Good idea. I can certainly see it being appropriate in certain forums.

If "certain forums" isn't possible, then what about just adding more mods in the places where it could be abused. I'm sure people hit the report post buttons enough, so I'm not sure if I fully buy into the belief that people would hide things in the spoiler tags.

The other suggestion would be to stay away from the "American Idol" thread until you've seen the episode. :P

Moderators can see edits, so I think we should have spoilers.

Ok, all jokes aside, the reason VT can't have it is because people like to edit the tags and have nudes and what not----the last thing VT wants. It's a shame, really.

I think maybe in some forums, like in movies or sports or GD forums, it might be kinda nice to have, but in H&A, especially p101 it wouldn't. In my opinion, it's got to be an all or nothing kind of thing - not have them here but not there (not to mention I don't know if that's possible tbh) and because of that, I don't know how realistic it is. Staff is having a discussion about this though, so it doesn't mean no.
