I did some more reading on that. Over most of its length (the head and body) it is for the sperm to mature. In that respect it is a bit like one of those conveyor belt pizza ovens where the pizza moves through the oven on a metal belt and the speed of movement and length of the oven have been worked out to have the pizza in there for just the right amount of time. Likewise, with the epididymis the length and speed of movement are just right to give the sperm the right amount of time to mature.

The tail, on the other hand, is for storage so ejaculating would lessen the pressure there.
