Age wise it would be when we were given free samples at school which would have been in year 10, so 14 or 15. It was good to practice putting one on, see what it felt like, and watch the tip fill up so it was fun, though I haven't bothered since. For me, like GoGoDiego, containing the mess isn't really an advantage - I prefer to see the fountain and feel it landing on me - and even if you find somewhere that gives them away you still have to go there and get them.

For all that I think everyone should do this at least once because it is good to practice putting a condom on when you are home and relaxed rather than when the pressure is on and, given you can't then re-use it later, you may as well wank with it on just to broaden your experience. Also that means you get to practice taking it off in the "used" state.
