Weather Situation

A developing low off the New South Wales coast is expected to produce gale-force southeasterly winds along the central part of the coast later Monday. The low is likely to deepen and move towards the Hunter or southern Mid North Coast during Tuesday with gale-force winds continuing and seas rising further.

Damaging winds averaging 55 to 70 km/h with gusts to about 100 km/h are forecast to develop along the coastal fringe of the Metropolitan, Hunter (including the Central Coast) and Illawarra forecast districts Monday afternoon and evening continuing into Tuesday.

Conditions are currently expected to be worst in the Newcastle and Nelson bay area later Tuesday as the low approaches the coast before abating into Wednesday.

Rainfall across all areas east of the ranges from about Wollongong to Taree will be widespread for Monday and Tuesday and as rainfall totals build up local flooding is possible. The heaviest rain for the event is likely to be over the Hunter Valley into the southern Mid North Coast.

Dangerous surf will also develop as the low deepens.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.

Weather Situation

A small intense low pressure system is currently moving towards the NSW Central Coast. Conditions will deteriorate over the next several hours with severe wind gusts and very heavy rainfall likely for peak hour into early evening.

Conditions are expected to slowly ease overnight tonight and into Wednesday as the low gradually begins to weaken.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS averaging 90 to 100 km/h with peak gusts up to 125 km/h are forecast for coastal parts of the Hunter forecast district (including the Central Coast).

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts to about 100 km/h are forecast to continue along the coastal fringe of the Metropolitan and Illawarra forecast districts.

HEAVY RAINFALL is likely in the Hunter district including the Central Coast, the Metropolitan and Illawarra districts.

VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is forecast for the Metropolitan, Hunter and Illawarra forecast districts. Beach conditions in these areas are dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.

Wind gusts to date include: 135 km/h at Norah Head, 120 km/h at Nobby's Head, 110 km/h at Williamtown, 107 km/h at Molineaux Point and Sydney Airport.

Rainfall totals from 9am Monday to 9am Tuesday include: 312 mm at Dungog, 259 mm at Crawford (near Bulahdelah), 186 mm at Wallsend, 172 mm at Wahroonga (Sydney).

Rainfall totals between 9am and 2:00pm include: Maitland 246 mm, Seaham 152 mm and Tocal 132 mm (all in the Hunter Valley).

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
