I know that some boys get done for religious reasons.
What medical reasons do boys get done? I've heard of tight foreskins. I've heard of boys tearing theirs - how do you explain that to parents or doctor? What other reasons are there to get done?

I will be getting circumcised in March for medical reasons. I have tight foreskin. The conversation with my dad was really awkward at first but he was good about it. It took me almost a year to build up the courage to talk to him about it. In retrospect, that was silly of me.
Other health benefits include:
Lower risk if certain STIs
Lower tisk of penile cancers
Lower risk UTI infections
Easier to keep clean
To match other family members and friends

They got a doctor in my school and checked everyone one this year, and a couple of boys need it done for that reason. I hope it works out for you

It not a big thing in the UK unless you need it. I've not thought of boys that may want it. Is there any specific reason?

Im in portugal so it´s even more rare, I´ve never seen a circumcised penis in my life, I just want it cause I feel it´s better looking and easier to clean :metal:

I got cut because I'd had tight foreskin for a long time and nothing else really made it better permanently. I'm sure some guys have gotten cut just cause they like the look more or something, but for me it was just so that everything would work without it hurting. I didn't have to explain it to my parents really, the doctor did that, and they were for it.

Lucky you, I´ve been to two doctors and they refused to cut me, they said I was perfectly normal and there was no need for it

lol definitely not lucky. Wish it'd just worked normal to start with. It'd be nice to have seen what it was like if the foreskin wasn't too tight and could get back past the head when it was hard.

Is it possible that in the US that they seem to go for circumcision quicker in Europe? They seem to do it as a last resort in the UK. They do try a few things first (stretching, steroid cream)

Maybe, but I tried creams on it and stretching for a long time (over a year) before the doc I was seeing for it said I should get it cut

I can retract my foreskin very smoothly

Mine was medical, I had a tight foreskin. It kinda cleared up after creams and stretches, but I kept getting micro tears in the tip of my foreskin. These used to get really sore and itchy and hot ( basically infected). In the end the dr said it was better to be circumcised as they would cause scarring and cause my foreskin to get tighter. Little brother had very tight foreskin and was cut for that reason.

A lot of "tight foreskin" issues can be solved via non-invasive methods like stretching or creams. What may also help, I've heard, is to slightly pinch the foreskin during urination so the "pouch" can balloon up. Once it's buldgy, release it. (Best done in shower or while sitting, as the stream may spray.)
It is impossible to predict when separation occurs. Sometimes it can happen by age four or five. Other tmes, it may be age 13 or even 15.
It is absolutely true that doctors in the USA go for circumcision long before others. They get paid to circumcise.
Lower risk of various stuff *may be* true, but it's extremely rare to begin with.
Anyone who says it's easier to keep clean, consider that retraction in the shower takes all of five seconds. Plus, once the body's natural protection (foreskin) is removed, the glans dries out, making lubrication almost a necessity and sex and erections can be quite painful.
If circumcision was cleaner, wouldn't Europe be full of diseased men? Europeans seem to have both their foreskin and no health issues...
There is a reason why circumcision, lube and erectile dysfunction pills like Cialis and Viagara are all common in the USA and relatively unheard of in Europe....the connection is real.

I think the most common thing is phimosis or smegma

The first one can't really be properly diagnosed until into puberty and the second can be taken care of by proper washing.

It's just a medical procedure, it just happens to have to do with your penis. I wouldn't worry about discussing it that much. I had a friend as a child that had it done when we were in school together. From what I remember, he had little tears in his foreskin, and every time he pulled it back they ripped open again, so it stung when he peed. It was beyond stretching because it was scarred, so if he wanted to have sex someday (and I'm pretty sure he did) he needed to get it cut off. I remember he was back playing at recess within just a few days.

How is health paid for where you live? Here in the UK for the NHS to fund treatment the doctor has to assess it as being clinically necessary. In the absence of medical necessity this is effectively cosmetic surgery. Here in the UK you can have that if you want, but you have to pay for it.

Certainly the hospital doing the op would expect to make a profit on it. Whether any of that is passed on to the surgeon concerned or whether he is just salaried I wouldn't know.
If anything the UK is become more like the USA in this respect in that the NHS has an internal market and hospitals get paid for elective surgery, which is pretty much anything your GP refers you to hospital for, as opposed to something that results from an A&E admission. On the other hand the GP has to pay the hospital out of his budget and the size of a GPs budget is determined by the number of patients on his list, not by how much treatment they receive, or how ill they are. Someone has presumably worked out the average cost per person across the service as a whole and they then get that multiped by the number of patients on the list. That means commercially there is a disincentive for GPs referring people for unnecessary treatment, or to put it the other way round it is in GPs commercial interests to only refer people for treatment they actually need.
Whether the commercial structure is the only explanation for the difference I don't know. You can certainly imagine, in a country where circumcision is relatively routine, doctors may think of it as something more trivial than in a country where it is not. Of course you could argue that is back to commercials again as to why it is routine but I think social inertia, i.e. parents wanting their son to be like their dad, also has a big part to play.

Here they only do it if you have phimosis, wich isnt the case, my foreskin slides down very smothly, so it´s cosmestic
