Do guys in my age group use Tinder? How does it work?

Doubtful. I don't know any teenaged guys who use internet dating services.

Tinder is only for hookups and I think you have to be 18 to use online dating services.

What is Tinder?

It's a garbage app in my opinion that tends to have strangers meet strangers with the marketed claim they go on dates.
But what I think the public is doing is using the app for booty calls.
It's gonna cause a spread of std/STI's that are antibiotic resistant (death sentence) when we look back on the app's affect on society in 60 years in my opinion.

My friend has it. Apparently it's nothing but bots and "land whales". He said it, not me.

Yeah a ton of people use it but mostly people use it to hook up/have phone sex with other people but if you're looking for a meaningful relationship you're looking in the wrong place

Yeah there's been a lot of rapes, robberies, and murders associated with that app according to the news.

You seem a bit over-excited by the whole idea.
People have been casually hooking up for sex for 1000's of years. All this app does is change the environment for that initial meeting from a pub with everyone intoxicated, to an app. People who casually want sex will find a way to have it and this really doesn't change that.
In London and NYC apps like Tinder and now their 'funkier' trending competitors are used by professionals who don't have time to meet people 'naturally'. In this way there is a large contingent of genuine individuals trying to find love. Imagine working a job where you leave the house at 6:30am and don't finish work till 7pm, with a 1 1/2 hour commute back. When are you going to find a date? Us teenagers have millions of ways to meet new people if we live in mildly busy towns, so don't really need it.
As for age range, that is whom it is meant for. I think they have an 18+ limit on joining? Someone tried to create a 'Tinder for Teens', but it got heavily criticised for attracting paedos...

Only ever heard of Tinder as being strictly 18+. I think a few 16/17 year olds go on it by lying about their age or that but they are few and far between.

No one uses it here. Or no one publicly admits it.

I'm pretty sure you have to be at least eighteen to use Tinder, it used to be different but they changed the rules a while back. So, it's unlikely that many people under eighteen use it because you'd have to lie about your age through Facebook. So, I guess if someone has already done that then they can easily get on it.

People who casually want sex will find a way to have it and this really doesn't change that.
It lowers the search-costs - the financial and opportunity cost of finding people to have casual sex with - which will (almost certainly) induce more people to engage in casual sex.
I think there's a definite role for technologies that help those locked into long-hours or commutes find relationships but Tinder doesn't seem to be playing much use there; even if it once did, the reputation associated with has - at this stage - crowded out anyone who sought to use if for that end (into the 'funkier' alternatives with different audience-compositions: I can recall one that tracked the sort of news-stories you read and suggested your matches on that basis, that one sounded cool).
So, I'd be more inclined to agree with Uniquemind that it is going to induce more casual sex (and whether that's a good or bad thing I don't really care for). Which is why I agree with her message to the OP, if you are looking for a relationship, you're probably better off not downloading Tinder.

I think the point of the OP remarks were that Tinder isn't really about love or dating. Its been adopted by the vast majority as an APP for casual hook up sex which in turn is potentially doing more harm to society than good which I think is hard to judge but if you look at all the news and bad press around Tinder....its not exactly doing good. Is it the monster that everyone thinks the APP is? Probably not.

I'm pretty sure all people on Tinder would be over 18- or maybe I'm just being naïve (again lol!)

And my point was simply that people do the exact same offline, certainly in the UK and US, at least on the app people tend to be sober when deciding to meet for sex...

As i say, they did but it gained too much bad press for attracting pedos...

It's only 18 and up now. There is a 16-17 one I believe though

There was one for 14-17. It was an automatic thing when Tinder saw your facebook age was in that range. It received a lot of ill attention because of the nature - all you had to do to get into "junior tinder" was change your facebook age forward a few years. They discontinued it for anyone under 18. That really hasn't stopped anyone, though, as the female side in my area is literally full of girls whose bios list their honest age and the number you see when you swipe is something like 23.
I definitely do use it. I think it's honestly kind of fun - at the very least, it's a fun way to meet people in your area. I've used it for hookups before as well.
